Due to its unique meta edge, the Scream franchise has always been one of the most successful horror series around, crossing over to achieve a lot of mainstream appeal – 2018’s Halloween has only just knocked the first entry from its top spot as the highest-grossing slasher. So we definitely wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a Scream 5.
Ghostface was last seen slashing his way through the cast back in 2011’s Scream 4 and though there were murmurs of a follow-up in the years after that, any plans that existed were respectfully rested after director Wes Craven passed away in 2015. However, the brand survives in the form of the Scream TV show and there’s clearly potential for the project to continue on with another filmmaker at the helm.
One cast member who’d certainly love to return is David Arquette. The actor played Danger-prone deputy Dewey Riley in all four movies, having married long-time love interest Gail Weathers (Arquette’s ex-wife Courtney Cox) and been promoted to sheriff by the time of 4, so he’d likely come back for more if a fifth film was made. For him, Scream 5 could act as a “tribute” to the late, great Craven if it were to happen.
“Yeah, absolutely. I would love to do that. I think [Craven would] still be a part of it in an incredible way. It would be like a tribute almost. Yeah, I think it would be really fun. I love everyone involved in it. Neve is such an anchor, and so incredible as an actress. I think there’s something there.”
In contrast, Neve Campbell herself has said that she isn’t sure about the idea of continuing without Craven as she called him the “heart” of the franchise and admitted she thinks it’d be “difficult” to work with another director in his place. However, she didn’t rule out the idea. After all, with the horror genre experiencing one of its biggest booms in a while, we imagine Dimension Films must be at least considering it.
