It’s taken a long time – too long, in fact – but Zombieland 2 is finally coming together and we couldn’t be happier about it. When it comes to sequels that fans are dying to see, few rank as high as this follow-up to the 2009 horror comedy and with the project being confirmed earlier this year, we’re now starting to learn more about it.
Just recently, in fact, writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who also penned the first one, spoke to /Film about what to expect and while they wouldn’t divulge any plot details at this early, early stage, they did promise that the sequel will be “wholly original,” consisting of stuff that hasn’t “been seen before and is exciting.”
Continuing on, they also outlined the current plan, saying that they hope to get started in early 2019:
“We’re shooting that in January and can’t wipe the smile off our faces. It’s the thing that Rhett and I as a team got our start on. It made us the screenwriters that we’ve become. That cast and the gang that’s back together with Ruben and our producer Gavin [Polone], the studio, we’re super, super excited about it. It’s pretty special and will come out basically 10 years from the first so it’s the perfect 10 year anniversary present I think.”
As we said above, no plot details were spilled, but we did get an official, though brief synopsis a while back, which teases the following:
“Through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, the Zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.”
Having earned just over $100 million globally on a production budget of about $25 million, Zombieland didn’t exactly have the ticket booth hopping as Sony would’ve hoped, but the film was hugely successful with critics, seeing as it currently sits at 90% on the Tomatometer and has gathered quite the cult following in the years since release. As such, hopes are high for the sequel and with any luck, the team truly will deliver something “wholly original.”
