Avengers 4 co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo seem to take pleasure in keeping us in the dark about the grand finale of Marvel’s Phase 3, but on the subject of MCU events beyond 2019, the filmmaking pair probably aren’t entirely clued in themselves. Specifically, when it comes to the possibility of the X-Men and various other Disney acquisitions being introduced into the saga, the Russo Brothers have apparently been left to speculate just like the rest of us.
In an interview with USA Today, Joe Russo was asked about the integration of Fox characters into the MCU, to which the Avengers: Infinity War helmsman replied with only a few vague suggestions.
“It could be a little time, with the integration of Fox and all the Fox characters,” Russo explained. “I haven’t talked to [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige] directly about it, so I don’t know what his plans are. But my guess would be they’re gonna integrate some of the other characters and take their time doing that.”
Of course, seeing how Avengers 4 is set to bring some huge changes to the cinematic universe while pointing the way forward to the future of the MCU, you have to imagine that Russo is at least a little more knowledgable of Feige’s plans than he’s currently letting on. That being said, Marvel Studios has rarely been the type to rush into things, and since the Disney/Fox deal isn’t set to officially to be finalized until next year, it’ll probably be a good while before the studio’s newly acquired characters have any major presence in the series.
So as much as the fans love to fantasize about the idea of Avengers 4 paving the way for the arrival of the X-Men and Fantastic Four, it’s looking like the movie will have more than enough stories to tell already when it hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
