Uber’s first electric scooters are finally here. The dockless devices arrived earlier this week in Santa Monica, California, a month after the city gave Uber and four other companies the green light to operate up to 250 shared scooters each for the next 18 months.
The ride-hail company is playing catch-up in a market that’s already flush with billion-dollar startups. Scooters first arrived unannounced last year in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Santa Monica. Since then, they’ve spread to scores of cities across the US and have begun appearing in Europe and the Middle East as well.
But rather than let them spread uninhibited, cities moved quickly to crack down on the scooters by issuing cease and desist letters or simply ordering them...
