As it stands, actor Robert Englund has exactly one screen outing lined up in the role of Freddy Krueger, and just a couple of months ago, we didn’t even know we’d be getting that. But once the star has made his cameo in the upcoming Halloween episode of The Goldbergs, there’s apparently a slight chance that he’ll still have one more A Nightmare on Elm Street film left in him.
In the lead-up to his appearance in the TV sitcom, Englund stopped by Access Live, where was he asked the inevitable question of whether he might ever bring Freddy back for a full movie. And while his response isn’t overly encouraging, it perhaps gives fans a little more hope than the actor has offered in the past.
“I think they want to reboot the franchise, but they’re gonna need a new actor,” Englund told the show’s hosts. “They’re gonna need a new actor to play Freddy because they’re gonna have to do eight of them. I might have one left in me… but yeah.”
Obviously, context is important here, in that Englund’s essentially trying to explain why he probably won’t come back to the role. Indeed, in a time where franchise potential seems to be a requirement for any horror movie to get the go-ahead, studios may not like the idea of their reboot’s lead killer only being around for one movie.
At the same time, if one Elm Street is all that Englund can give us, then surely there are plenty of fans who’ll gladly take that offer. After all, with Halloween currently making horror history at the box office, it’s clear that filmgoers still hold a place in their hearts for the slasher movie villains of yore.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Englund mentioned that he “would love to cameo in anything with integrity, connected with the franchise,” so even if we don’t get the star back as Freddy, that doesn’t mean he’s necessarily out of the Nightmare on Elm Street series for good. But if fans are willing to get this excited about a sitcom cameo for the character, then maybe it would be in the studio’s best interest to give this dream demon one final set of teens to bother.
