I watched Hot Summer Nights on Amazon the other week since I’ll watch anything starring Timothée Chalamet right now and also it just looked really fun and stylish. And it is loaded with style — it feels like a menagerie of pastiche and homage, rearranged into a brand new story.
The thing I found most interesting about the film was its use of myth. Like The Sandlot, the film relies on a narrator looking back at an important time in their life; something a little dreamy and idealized, filled with big, memorable characters and a small world that feels huge in the moment.
But the problem with mythologizing your characters is that we have to see these characters, and we learn the truth behind the myth. I imagine there are some fascinating...
