Though Disney are evidently standing by their decision to fire James Gunn from the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the measure has been met with heavy criticism, both from the fans and from the filmmaker’s former cast. Among those dissenting voices is Michael Rooker, but the actor known for playing Yondu does see the silver lining in a more recent development.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Gunn has been brought in to write and possibly direct Suicide Squad 2, the sequel to what many consider to be the DCEU’s own attempt at Guardians. And when Rooker spoke at Walker Stalker con in Atlanta, he suggested that things could turn out well for his former collaborator after all.
“It’s terrible, isn’t it? Yeah, but oh well, guess what? He’s on a gig already. Suicide Squad, that’s right. He’s writing it and directing it as well.”
While Rooker deleted his Twitter account in protest of Gunn’s dismissal, the performer has also said that he’d love to do another Guardians movie, which probably isn’t something you’ll hear co-star Dave Bautista say anytime soon.
Of all the franchise’s cast, the Drax actor has been the most outspoken about his disappointment in Disney, and has said that he might not want to continue working for the studio. In fact, Bautista has even expressed an interest in joining Gunn for the next Suicide Squad, and much of the internet seems right with him in this idea.
In any case, it could be a while before we see another Gunn-penned project reach the big screen, but if recent reports about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are anything to go by, then there’s a chance that Suicide Squad 2 will end up beating it to theaters.
