Arthur Curry – or as he’s apparently known round some parts, “that fish-boy” – is back in a new Aquaman trailer that puts a spotlight on the relationship between Jason Momoa and Amber Heard’s characters, but throws in plenty of action along the way.
After the 5-minute promo released earlier this month, this latest video offers little in the way of new footage, but it does seem to apply a slightly more light-hearted tone to its quick bursts of above-the-ground spectacle. As well as giving us some brief excerpts from a fight between Arthur and Black Manta, the trailer also exhibits some of the roof-hopping chase scene that looks to have been captured on the movie’s Sicily set. Meanwhile, the money shot remains the reveal of Aquaman in his classic green-and-orange costume.
The trailers have certainly done their job in getting DC fans excited, but after Justice League underperformed at the box office, James Wan’s movie is facing the pressure of keeping the public invested in this ever-rickety cinematic universe. As it stands, Aquaman is reportedly tracking for a $40 to 60 million opening weekend, which is nothing to write home about as far as superhero flicks go, but good word-of-mouth could still keep this thing afloat.
Speaking of which, Warner Bros. head Toby Emmerich at least has some nice things to say about the project, claiming it strikes a great balance between “fun and jeopardy, edge and wonder, comedy and tragedy.” And while that’s a source with obvious bias, early test screening reactions don’t seem all that bad, either.
In any case, with Momoa already pitching ideas for the sequel, we’ll see if Aquaman manages to draw in the crowds when it hits theaters on December 21st.
