Halloween Tops Box Office With $32 Million Second Weekend

The new Halloween lives up to its name as the definitive release of this late-October period, with the David Gordon Green-helmed flick set to win its second weekend at the box office.

The eleventh instalment in this classic slasher series will have earned a domestic total of $32 million from this latest three-day run, which marks a 58% decline from last weekend’s $76.2 million, but is still easily enough to keep it at the top spot.

At number two is A Star is Born with $14 million, while its early October rival Venom sits at third place with $10.7 million. Meanwhile, the strongest opening this week came from Hunter Killer, the critically panned action-thriller starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman, which managed to take in $7.2 million.

If it weren’t for Venom’s phenomenal opening earlier this month, Halloween would’ve beat the record for highest-grossing first weekend in October, an honor previously held by 2013’s Gravity. Of course, this isn’t the only impressive claim that can be made by Laurie Strode’s latest outing, with actress Jamie Lee Curtis recently breaking down the box office feats as follows:

“OK. I’m going for one BOAST post.  Biggest horror movie opening with a female lead.

Biggest movie opening with a female lead over 55.

Second biggest October movie opening ever.

Biggest Halloween opening ever”

With film number eleven doing this well, Blumhouse Productions has every intention of making the series into at least an even dozen, with writer Danny McBride confirming a couple of days ago that the team are already in talks for a sequel. Whether or not Curtis will return, however, remains unclear for the time being, with the actress saying this month that she’d do it on the condition that Green directed once more.

There’ll be time to decide on the details of the next Halloween, but for now, Blumhouse must be feeling pretty happy about how this latest horror reboot is working out for them.
