Apple’s free learn-to-code Swift Playgrounds sandbox arrives on Mac

Nearly four years after it launched as an iPad-exclusive in 2016, Apple’s Swift Playgrounds app is now available for Mac as part of Apple’s Catalyst app initiative, designed to help bridge the software gap between its macOS and iOS platforms (via 9to5Mac).

The free app cleverly disguised as a video game teaches kids how to use Apple’s Swift programming language, and to maybe build apps of their own. Now that it’s on Mac, it might be easier for kids to publish those Swift apps, too; they can now use those skills on the same laptop they’d need for the company’s Xcode software. Xcode isn’t available on Apple’s tablets.

Apple’s product page also says your code will seamlessly move from iPad to Mac as you write it, and the new app comes...

Snapchat is testing a big new redesign

Snap is working on two significant tests that could reshape its flagship app in a critical year. Tipsters have provided me with screenshots of two ongoing tests that have rolled out to a small percentage of Snapchat’s user base. One is a redesign of the app for Android and iOS that provides a new home for the Snap Map and the company’s original video programming. The other is a test of breaking news headlines inside the app that injects timely news briefs into Snapchat to complement the existing magazine-style stories on the Discover page.

Let’s look at them in turn.

The redesign takes an app that has long been limited to three screens and splits them into five. Snapchat currently opens to the camera, with a space for chats to the left...

Birds Of Prey Fans Mock Title Change On Twitter

Spare a thought for Huntress and Black Canary, for the Clown Princess of Crime has officially taken top billing on Birds of Prey.

Shortly after its release (and subsequent failure at the domestic box office), Warner Bros. made the decision to rebrand its Suicide Squad spinoff as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, all in the hope of boosting SEO (search engine optimization) so that budding comic book movie fans are able to find the movie as quickly as possible. Seemingly, Birds of Prey doesn’t garner as much engagement online without overtly adding a dose of Dr. Quinzel.

It’s a situation that evokes memories of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt’s far-future thriller Edge of Tomorrow, which was later titled Live Die Repeat in time for its home video release – a fate that will likely befall Harley as well. So you can effectively say goodbye to the whole ‘Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.’

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s a move that has drawn criticism (and, in some cases, outright mockery) online. Twitter, specifically, where a number of fans called out the Birds of Prey marketing.

Whether Warner’s last-minute alteration has any tangible effect on box office performance remains to be seen. For now, Birds of Prey is performing well below expectations, having taken just $33.5 million in North America during its opening weekend – a far cry from the $135.1 million collected by Suicide Squad across the same period back in 2016.

That means the newly-titled Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey is staring down the face of a H-U-G-E second weekend at the international box office, where it’ll go toe-to-toe with Sonic The Hedgehog. But who will triumph? The blue speedster? Or Gotham’s Clown Princess of Crime? We’ll find out very soon indeed.

The Mandalorian Director Says Helming A Star Wars Movie Is Career Suicide

It’s not an easy job being the director of a Star Wars movie, and even an industry veteran such as Taika Waititi isn’t sure if he could handle the heat.

Now that The Rise of Skywalker has officially ended the nine-movie saga which started all the way back in 1977, fans are wondering what’s next for the franchise. Well, we’re not sure if Rian Johnson will get to create his independent trilogy, and considering the fact that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have dropped their films to focus on their Netflix deal, Star Wars projects might currently be up for grabs as Disney prepares to embark on a new era of a galaxy far, far away.

Taika Waititi, who’s already directed the finale of The Mandalorian, has been rumored several times to be in negotiations with the Mouse House to helm his own Star Wars project. But so far, nothing’s been confirmed. The filmmaker recently sat down with Variety to talk about his Oscars win though and when asked if there was any truth to these claims, he simply said that he’d love to do a movie for the franchise if it made sense and didn’t feel like “career suicide.”

In his own words:

“I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with “Star Wars,” and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f—ing love to… If it was right. I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

Honestly, Waititi has every right to be scared of tackling a Star Wars project, as the last three movies have proved that the divisive and controversial nature of this fandom isn’t something that anyone would want.

Still, it’d be interesting to see the director’s unique quirkiness manifested in the world of a galaxy far, far away, but even if he does decide to work on a future Star Wars movie, Waititi still has Thor: Love and Thunder to wrap up first.
