‘Red Notice’ is already Netflix’s 2nd most-watched movie ever

Netflix recently changed the way it measures audience data, moving away from the standard four-week metrics that count two minutes of streaming as a household having viewed a project in favor of cumulative hours watched, and it’s given a brand new insight into what really quantifies as a massive success for the platform.

One of the first casualties of the new system was Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction, which was dislodged as the most-watched in-house movie of all-time, as the bruising actioner’s 231 million total minutes saw it swap places with Sandra Bullock’s supernatural thriller Bird Box, which ascended to the throne with 281 million minutes.

Christina Ricci starring in high concept cyberpunk sci-fi

Christina Ricci has been working solidly for over 30 years, but the actress finds herself in the midst of a mini resurgence thanks to the acclaim that’s greeted her role on Showtime series Yellowjackets, while she’s set for her biggest movie appearance in a while when The Matrix Resurrections comes to theaters and HBO Max next month.

As per Deadline, The Addams Family star is sticking with the genre for a little longer, having signed on to play a supporting part in the intriguing-sounding cyberbunk story The Dresden Sun, which is being written and directed by Michael Ryan.

Kelsey Grammer says he’d love to play Beast again

As far as on-point casting goes, you can’t argue with Kelsey Grammer being hired to play Hank McCoy in the X-Men franchise, with the performance essentially requiring an extension of his Frasier persona, albeit with the caveat of spending hours in the makeup chair to be turned into a big, blue, furry mutant.

Despite how well-suited he was for the role, Grammer didn’t get much opportunity to make an impact as part of the superhero franchise. His screentime in both The Last Stand and Days of Future Past was limited, but he still did enough to leave an impression, even if Nicholas Hoult put his own stamp on the character as the younger version.

Review: ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’

Hollywood has struggled turning video games into viable movie franchises for the better part of 30 years, and it’s a little ironic that Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil would be the one to break the mold, spawning a six-film series that earned over $1.2 billion at the box office.

Removing the active element when transplanting console properties to the big screen as passive experiences instantly eliminates the very thing that makes them so popular in the first place, so we regularly see filmmakers double down on fan service and Easter Eggs to overcompensate. While that’s all well and good, it can often make the lore impenetrable to newcomers, who end up being hit with a barrage of images, references and plot points that mean nothing to anyone outside of the diehards.

‘Red Notice’ director confirms sequel talks with Netflix

Based on how Netflix have been responding to the movie’s performance so far, the boardroom will be desperate to get a sequel to action blockbuster Red Notice into active development as quickly as possible, especially given the hectic schedules of the three A-list stars.

On top of scoring the most-watched opening day and first weekend in the platform’s history, Dwayne Johnson touted that the globetrotting heist caper has already been viewed by over 150 million subscribers, so when Netflix releases the official data, we’ll be comfortably looking at the streamer’s biggest original film ever.

‘No Time to Die’ still expected to lose money despite box office success

Cary Joji Fukunaga, Daniel Craig and the rest of the No Time to Die team would have been celebrating wildly after it was confirmed that the 25th installment in the James Bond franchise had passed Fast & Furious 9 to become the highest-grossing Hollywood movie to hit theaters since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released in December 2019.

It’s an impressive achievement given the circumstances, especially with the globetrotting espionage epic having been available on VOD for almost two weeks. At the time of writing, No Time to Die‘s haul is sitting at a mammoth $734 million, and yet there are no guarantees that 007’s latest adventure is going to turn a single penny of profit.

‘The Matrix Resurrections’ producer says it isn’t a sequel

While it’s obviously a fact that a fourth installment in the franchise is incoming, with the movie set to hit theaters and HBO Max on December 22, nobody involved in the production has come right out and said that The Matrix Resurrections is a direct sequel to the original trilogy.

We’ve heard various teases and tidbits of how it references the events that previously unfolded on the big screen between 1999 and 2003, but everyone has stopped short of calling it a continuation. While that’s not much of a surprise given the reality-bending premise of the series as a whole, it’s set to create a lot of curiosity as we approach the final few weeks before release.

Jeremy Renner says Robert Downey Jr. took everyone in the MCU under his wing

The success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, in an onscreen capacity at least, can be directly attributed to Robert Downey Jr. Had Iron Man not become a critical and commercial smash hit, rejuvenating the actor’s career and turning him into an A-list star overnight, then the franchise as we know it could have turned out much differently.

It’s something that Kevin Feige has admitted on numerous occasions, and it only further enhanced the symbiosis between RDJ and Tony Stark when the MCU’s biggest star and most popular name knew fine well that he was the catalyst for what soon became the most successful film series in history.

‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’ reviews are mixed across the board

The trouble with video game adaptations in general is that many of them fail to strike the balance between pandering to the core fanbase and appealing to those unfamiliar with the source material, which often ends up creating a discrepancy between the critical and fan consensus, which in turn may affect box office takings.

We saw it earlier this year with the Mortal Kombat reboot, which wound up with a solid-if-unspectacular Rotten Tomatoes score of 54% and a commercial haul of less than $90 million, while users deemed it worthy of an 86% rating as it became the most-watched HBO Max hybrid release of the year.

‘The Matrix Resurrections’ director shot the action in 20-minute takes

Younger audiences most likely won’t be aware of the seismic impact that The Matrix had on the industry as a whole at the turn of the millennium, not just the action genre. The Wachowskis changed the game with their jaw-dropping cyberpunk classic, and you could barely turn around for years without bumping into a thinly-veiled imitation.

Suddenly, slow motion and bullet time were being mercilessly replicated or parodied, everybody wore a black leather trench coat and sunglasses, while intricate wire-assisted fight choreography and gun fu became the industry standard. With that in mind, The Matrix Resurrections stunt team would have needed to pull out all of the stops to slap a fresh coat of paint on a formula they came damn close to perfecting back in 1999.

Andrew Garfield has barely been away from the headlines during the last few weeks, and in news that must make the actor so happy, he’s currently been a hot topic of conversation for reasons entirely unrelated to the never-ending discourse surrounding his presumed involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

An action blockbuster that’s so bad it’s good is rebounding on Netflix

Snake Eyes is set to go down in the history books as the biggest box office bomb of 2021, failing to recoup even $40 million of its estimated $80 million budget, never mind how much Paramount spent on promotion and marketing.

Having now gone zero-for-three on the big screen adventures of G.I. In a surprising turn of events, though, Stephen Sommers’ opening salvo The Rise of Cobra has been rocketing up the Netflix most-watched list, having jumped almost 40 places on the rankings in the last 24 hours to set its sights on the Top 20, as per FlixPatrol.
