‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ deliberately created a sense of unease around Namor during shooting
Filmmaker Ryan Coogler reveals how he elevated the sense of unease surrounding the nefarious Namor in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’
Per SlashFilm, Coogler shares that he instructed the production team to craft an unsettling ambiance in the underwater kingdom of Talokan, to enhance a feeling of foreboding about Namor (Tenoch Huerta).

Morbid ‘Star Wars’ speculation says Luke should have died halfway through ‘A New Hope’
Luke Skywalker changed the course of galactic history. In A New Hope, he destroyed the Death Star and set the Empire on a path to its eventual defeat. Then, in Return of the Jedi, his choices in the final confrontation with Palpatine saw Anakin finally turn to the light and throw his master into a reactor shaft.
Beyond that, he’s responsible for Kylo Ren, meaning some of the responsibility for the rise of the First Order can be placed at his door, though his training of Rey gave her the tools she needed to finally wipe Palpatine from the face of the galaxy in The Rise of Skywalker.

‘Shazam!’ star shares what it means for DC Films to have James Gunn
DC fans are used to disappointment. The last decade has seen Marvel Studios go from strength to strength while the DCEU wallowed in disappointment, mismanagement, and controversy. We’ve seen the Justice League debacle, the last-minute cancellation of Batgirl, and various projects trapped in development hell for extended periods.
But now, finally, there may be some light on the horizon. The old executives have gotten the boot, with Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad‘s James Gunn brought in to act as DC’s equivalent of Kevin Feige.

Review: ‘Nanny’ is a potent, haunting, and timely fable
Director Nikyatu Jusu’s debut feature, Nanny, begins with a potent image. Our main character, Aisha (Anna Diop), is sleeping in bed as water is creeping into the frame, onto sheets. A spider crawls across her face, about to touch her mouth when she starts, finally awake.
It won’t be the last time we see the water, or the spider, as we follow Aisha through her life working for an Upper East Side couple from hell, trying her best to bring her son Lamine (Jahleel Kamara) over to the US from Senegal so they can be together. Water in Nanny serves as a symbol of potent rage and rebirth, carrying both the promise of destruction and transformation. The tension between the two possibilities for Aisha is one of the many elements of Nanny that make it a standout in the horror genre this year. Its focus on Black feminine rage and resilience is what makes it an impressive and unique fable worth watching.

25 years might have finally been enough to soften the stance on a sci-fi icon’s underwhelming final stand
While the Alien franchise is often mentioned in the same breath as Predator, a fair assumption given that they’ve crossed over in live-action, video games, comic books, and plenty more forms of media over the decades, the former is arguably better-placed to be compared to Terminator for several notable reasons.
Not only do they each boast a phenomenal action-packed second installment directed by James Cameron, with both Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgement Day among the finest sequels, action movies, and sci-fi stories ever made, but the blockbuster properties both started going off the rails in their third installments, with a pair of undisputed all-time greats being followed by a succession of inferior sequels, attempted reboots, and general apathy from old and new fans alike.

As Disney suffers through its latest box office bomb, another flop celebrates 20 years
What makes the efforts of marketing so interesting is that it often plays a key role in determining how many people end up seeing your movie. As one of the most powerful entertainment corporations on the planet, one can imagine that Disney would be privy to a nuance like this. Why, then, has the Mouse neglected promotion for Strange World?
There could be multiple answers for this, some of them more malicious than others, but the end result is still a disappointing performance for Disney’s latest animated venture, reportedly making a mere $18.6 million in the five days since its release. With a reported budget as high as $180 million, Strange World is in for the fight of its life—a fight that’s projected to result in a $100 million loss.

MCU fans are confident they’ve already figured out ‘The Kang Dynasty’s cliffhanger ending
Dedicated fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe seem to be living in the future, which is to say they have a tendency to set their sights on projects releasing several years from now, to say nothing of living for those sweet mid-credits scenes.
In fairness, looking ahead to a project like Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is a fairly delectable prospect, seeing as it’s shaping up to be the Multiverse Saga’s answer to Infinity War, and is therefore bound to introduce an earth-shattering event that sets up the equally anticipated Secret Wars at the likely cost of absolutely devastating the denizens of Earth-199999.

Review: ‘Disenchanted’ is not the sequel that we wanted, but it’s there
Disney isn’t afraid to ask “what happens after happily ever after?”. The studio has been doing it for more than two decades with other fairytales such as Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and Frozen, just to name a few. So when Disney announced that it would be releasing Disenchanted, a sequel to the 2007 film Enchanted, some fans wondered if this was necessary, especially since the opener was released 15 years ago. But in the end, it’s here and available to stream on Disney Plus.
Disenchanted is a Disney film about life after happily ever after, and how it’s not as we expected it to be. It starts with Pip the Chipmunk giving a recap of Enchanted to his two children. They asked for more, so he told them the story of Disenchanted, a tale about life after the events of the original.

DC boss James Gunn offers impatient fans a reminder you can’t fix a broken franchise in 3 weeks
It was a bold move for James Gunn to take his first step onto the corporate ladder by agreeing to take over DC Studios as co-CEO alongside Peter Safran, because the franchise has been on a shaky nail for a long time.
That’s not to say it’s ever come close to imploding and being discarded entirely, but there’s been so many stops and starts, canceled and abandoned projects, in-fighting, social media vitriol, and warring factions both in the boardroom and on the internet that it was beginning to feel like nobody wanted the job in the first place after the search for DC’s own Kevin Feige figure dragged on and on and on.

DreamWorks changes its iconic logo, and everyone hates it with a passion
Since being founded in 1994, DreamWorks has gone on to become arguably the biggest force in feature-length animation that isn’t owned by Disney, with audiences around the world instantly recognizing the company’s opening motif of the little dude fishing in the moon.
Despite the old saying making it abundantly clear that you shouldn’t fix it if it isn’t broke, the company has gone ahead and done it anyway, and it hasn’t exactly been well-received. Taking a page out of the Marvel and DC playbook, the new and extended (but definitely not improved) intro makes a point of referencing DreamWorks’ heavy hitters and highest-grossing properties.

The consensus on an infamous sci-fi disaster edges further and further away from cult classic status
While it’s entirely down to a matter of opinion and personal preference at the end of the day, there’s nonetheless a school of thought that remains adamant the Wachowskis haven’t made a great movie since The Matrix, and it can’t be a coincidence that the first feature directed by one half of the pair since the infamous Jupiter Ascending was last year’s IP-driven fourth installment.
Reloaded, Revolutions, and Resurrections definitely have their supporters, as do Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer, and for a while it appeared as though Jupiter Ascending was heading straight for the drawer marked “cult classic.” Sure, it was an unmitigated financial disaster that earned $184 million on a budget rumored to be around $200 million, but many long-lasting favorites fail theatrically.

But Chucky’s going to want to tone down the macho for a bit, because the porcelain star of the Child’s Play franchise might not be as battle-ready as some of us may have thought.

A low-budget 2023 horror film shaping up to be the next ‘Blair Witch’ is already considered one of the year’s best
This year’s treasure trove of horror releases still has another month to go, but some lucky fans are already pouring their love out for an upcoming 2023 release that, should it serve as an omen for next year’s horror slate, will start off a year that will be slashing for the fences with more triumph than Jordan Peele’s three-for-three record out of the gate.
The film in question is Skinamarink, a low-budget feature from writer/director Kyle Edward Ball that’s been making its rounds on festival circuits to an overwhelmingly positive response.

‘Chucky’ could crossover with other Universal monsters as creator confirms talks
Cinematic universes continue to be on the up-and-up as time goes on, chiefly due in part to its popularization by the likes of superhero heavyweights Marvel Studios and DC Studios. Indeed, if Tarantino had been born two decades later, we could have very well been treated to Django Freeman, Aldo Raine, the Bride, and Jules Winnfield joining forces for a depraved, delicious answer to Avengers and Justice League.
The horror genre in particular seems like a prime candidate, and we almost got it in the form of Universal Studios’ Dark Universe, which would have seen classic monsters such as Dracula, the Wolf Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon all shore up the lore in one collective canon. Unfortunately, the woefully fated Mummy movie, with its poor financial and critical performance, dashed those plans at the outset.

A nightmarish survival thriller with a stomach-churning twist remains seared into the consciousness
As a general rule of thumb, the survival thriller is one of the most consistent subgenres of cinema for generating the maximum amount of nail-biting tension, with 1993’s Alive adding extra layers onto an already-intense form of storytelling by regaling audiences with not just a true story, but one with a harrowing twist.
The fate of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 has been seared into the collective consciousness for decades, due partly to the sheer volume of adaptations to have arrived in the decades since the 1972 incident. There’s been at least a dozen film, television, audio, and literary re-tellings of the haunting tale, but it’s the Hollywood version that’s riding the crest of a stomach-churning wave on Reddit.

A rare attempt to defend J.J. Abrams doesn’t go according to plan
J.J. Abrams career has seen some major highs and lows. He’s best known for his work on films like the Star Trek reboots, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and television shows like Fringe, Alias, and Lost, all of which he created.
His work in Star Wars in particular, gave Abrams a bad name among filmgoers and the years since Rise of Skywalker‘s release have seen his popularity plummet. One of his many mid-level supporters is working to turn that around, via a recent post to Reddit’s movies sub, by pointing out the director and producer’s finer moments.

‘Wakanda Forever’ producer claims there was no debate over the new Black Panther, despite already saying the exact opposite
In the run-up to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, fans couldn’t stop speculating over who might be the eponymous African nation’s new protector as there were just so many feasible options. Of course, as we all now know, Marvel ultimately elected to go with the most obvious play by having Shuri step up to take on her brother’s mantle. But were any other contenders seriously considered? Well, that’s tough to answer as one key member of the crew has offered some contradictory comments.
Producer Nate Moore recently sat down with Yahoo! Entertainment and claimed the “only conversation” that was had involved casting Shuri as the second Black Panther. Moore explained, “Calls for M’Baku or Okoye or Nakia seemed a bit like throwing darts at a dartboard for me… And Letitia Wright nails it.”

Horror fans celebrate the rare franchises that dodged the curse of diminishing returns
If there’s one thing that horror fans are more cognizant of than anyone, it’s that too much of a good thing can quickly become a bad thing. Indeed, over the years we’ve had too much of a good thing in space, Manhattan, Hell, and toe-to-toe with Freddy, and too much of a good thing written and directed by Rob Zombie, just to name a few.
But not every horror franchise falls victim to diminishing returns. For every slasher icon that ends up sputtering out on a lackluster sixth or seventh film, there’s a saga that has at least managed to stay on both feet for just as long, and the folks over at r/horror are handing out gold medals to those that have stood the test of time, as well as the soulless hurdle of corporate involvement.

‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ is more important to MCU canon than you might think
As a festive spectacular that runs for less than an hour and features a self-aware storyline that finds Kevin Bacon being hunted by intergalactic interlopers, it would be fairly easy to write off The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special as a fairly inconsequential addition to the never-ending churn of Marvel Cinematic Universe content.
However, James Gunn has made it clear that the second Marvel Studios Special Presentation is a lot more integral to the complexion of both next summer’s Vol. 3 and the mythology at large, as he revealed to Entertainment Tonight.

Some fans feel bad for the victim of the most brutal death in ‘Star Wars’
There are many brutal deaths in Star Wars. Mace Windu got his hand sliced off and was thrown out of a window, Owen and Beru were burnt alive by Stormtroopers, Jabba’s dancer Oola screamed as she was eaten by the Rancor, and multiple Jedi Masters were betrayed and shot to death during Order 66, but there’s one death that seems to hit particularly hard for fans.
In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin dispatched Count Dooku, chopping off both his hands before decapitating him. That’d be bad enough, but it’s only in his final moments that Dooku realizes he’s simply been used all along by Palpatine, and that he’s outlived his usefulness:

Marvel masses wonder if a franchise icon would stand a chance against another MCU badass
Fantasizing about matchups between two of your favorite characters is a practice as old as time; from Goku versus Superman to Deadpool versus Boba Fett to one James Bond versus another James Bond, the world of fiction knows no more frequent a battleground than the imaginations of fans.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, with its galaxy-sized cast of icons, grants us the luxury of dreaming up fights while only pitching names from canon. One popular choice for a combatant is Black Widow, the hard-boiled assassin who sacrificed herself during the events of Avengers: Endgame. Indeed, since her death means we won’t be seeing her squaring up against anyone anymore, it’s particularly fun to imagine what brawls could have been.
