If I had to single out one horror movie as my favorite of all time, I’d have to say it’s The Shining. Sure, it may have been a very different beast from Stephen King’s novel (and more accurately adapted as a 1997 TV miniseries), but Stanley Kubrick managed to craft one of hell of a film if I must say so. Still, a lot of credit also goes to lead actor Jack Nicholson, whose performance has long since remained iconic.
Now, you may remain content watching it whenever it comes on TV or reliving the nightmare on DVD, but some of you reading this may yearn to see it in superior format. That said, the announcement of the 1980 classic coming to 4k Ultra HD probably made you jump for joy.
In case you hadn’t heard, Kubrick’s opus has been remastered in 4K using a new 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative. If you happen to be at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend, you can check it out there. If not, you can bring home The Shining on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray or Digital beginning on October 1st.
Let it also be known that Best Buy is set to roll out an exclusive steelbook edition, so the rabid collectors out there will want to keep an eye out for that. In fact, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of other retailers being granted their own unique exclusives, so it’s recommended that you shop around as the date draws near.
This comes at quite the opportune time, too, because lest we forget, Doctor Sleep arrives in theaters on November 8th. Being a sequel to The Shining, you’d better believe I’m seeing that one.
