Avengers: Endgame wrapped up the threat of Thanos, but it may have also brought to a close another major connective tissue of the MCU that’s also been around since 2012’s The Avengers – the superhero team themselves.
We Got This Covered has been informed by a source that the Avengers initiative started by Nick Fury has fulfilled its purpose and the team won’t be assembling again in the franchise going forward. Apparently, this will be established in Spider-Man: Far From Home, which will mention that the heroes are now “in their own corners of the universe.”
This makes sense, too, considering that only half the original six are still around after Endgame. With Hulk’s arm permanently injured and Hawkeye expected to pass on his mantle to Kate Bishop (something our source confirms as well), only Thor’s really around to continue his own franchise. Without those core heroes in operation, the team are effectively no more.
This doesn’t mean a new group won’t arise to follow their legacy, though. As we reported back in January, the Young Avengers are coming to the MCU, but under the name New Avengers. From what we understand, the next generation of heroes will keep the Avengers’ brand alive and Kate Bishop will likely feature on the team, as will Iron Lad and a few others from the comics.
We’ve been told several times now to expect a very different MCU in Phase Four and the end of the Avengers would definitely qualify as that. Given all the new properties coming to the franchise over the next few years, it makes sense to clear the field a little as well. Those on the way include the Eternals, the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four and, eventually, the X-Men, but how they’ll all fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains to be seen.
In any case, this July’s Spider-Man: Far From Home looks set to mop up the leftover plot-threads of Avengers: Endgame before Phase Four begins and the MCU becomes an Avengers-free zone.
