Original Child’s Play Director Reacts To Mark Hamill As The New Chucky

Even by the standards of horror remakes, the new Child’s Play has been the subject of a fair amount of backlash, but one development that’s even got some detractors curious is the casting of Mark Hamill for the voice of Chucky. And as it turns out, even the director of the 1988 original approves of the choice.

Over the weekend, Hamill tweeted a video in which he announced his involvement in the upcoming reboot. The post was then shared by Child’s Play and Fright Night helmsman Tom Holland, who had just two words to offer on the matter:

“Smart move”

While some fans may have a hard time imagining anyone but Brad Dourif as the killer doll, it sounds like Holland is willing to give this fresh take on Chucky a chance.

That being said, you probably shouldn’t expect Child’s Play writer Don Mancini to offer his endorsement anytime soon. Having steered the series for thirty years, the scribe has made no bones about his disapproval of Orion’s decision to reboot the property without his involvement. Complicating matters further is the fact that Mancini is currently at work on a Chucky TV series, which keeps in line with the original continuity of the movies, and is expected to see Dourif reprise his role.

Regardless, it must be said that Lars Klevberg’s film has managed to assemble a pretty impressive cast, which also includes Aubrey Plaza of Parks and Recreation fame and Brian Tyree Henry from Atlanta and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. And despite the ongoing criticism faced by the film, there’s every chance that the new Child’s Play can still find its audience when it arrives in theaters on June 21st, 2019.
