The first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrived on Friday and sent the internet into meltdown with its awesomeness. We all have differing opinions about the movies, but Star Wars has always known how to deliver the most exciting trailers around. Even The Phantom Menace had an amazing teaser trailer.
In fact, Episode I‘s trailer was so good that it seems the Episode IX preview decided to pinch its tagline. Kudos to Twitter user @Jtimsuggs who, among others, noticed that the Rise of Skywalker sneak peek deliberately called back to the beginning of the saga.
Both trailers featured the tagline “every generation has a legend,” but where Phantom added “every saga has a beginning,” the Rise edition appropriately changed it to “the saga comes to an end.”
Most of us overlooked this clever bit of tagline thievery as we were distracted with the callbacks to the Original Trilogy in the trailer. Not least the glimpse of the destroyed Death Star and, oh yes, the final shock of the sound of the Emperor’s evil cackle. Something later confirmed to signal that Ian McDiarmid is indeed returning as Palpatine in Episode IX.
It can’t be just a coincidence that the trailer harks back to both previous trilogies, either, as director J.J. Abrams has stressed that he wanted Rise of Skywalker to be a satisfactory conclusion to the whole nine-movie saga that’s been unfolding for 40 years plus change. Creator George Lucas was even consulted on the project to make sure that the script from Abrams and Chris Terrio got to the heart of what Star Wars is about. So, linking back to Episode I in the trailer is certainly symbolic of what the production team are trying to do with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
