Will Marvel Introduce Another Thor After Avengers: Endgame?

Though much of the internet seems convinced that Avengers: Endgame will serve as the last major outing for Captain America and Iron Man, predictions of Thor’s exit aren’t quite so common, but having been in this franchise for even longer than Chris Evans, no one could blame Chris Hemsworth for calling it quits after the Phase 3 finale.

But while the star of three Thor movies and four Avengers films might well be nearing the end of his arc, a new piece from CinemaBlend argues that the God of Thunder could still pass on the torch to a new hero. After all, there’ve been multiple Thors in the comics, and while your average filmgoer might be a little baffled by someone else bearing the Thor name, there’s still the possibility of someone else serving as his de facto successor under a different name.

In the comics, the next Thor was often determined by who was deemed worthy to wield Mjolnir, and while the hammer was destroyed by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, there’s an argument to be made that the weapon might still be recovered via time travel in Endgame. But if that sounds a little convoluted to you, perhaps Mjolnir isn’t essential to finding a new Thor, especially when Hemsworth’s character currently wields the weapon of another Thor-like figure from the comics.

To elaborate, Stormbreaker has traditionally been the tool of Beta Ray Bill, a character that was almost introduced in Ragnarok and has since been rumored to show up in one of Marvel’s Disney Plus shows. So, if Thor really is out of the game, perhaps Bill could be the one to inherit his latest weapon?

Of course, with so many Marvel characters yet to make their MCU debut, and with a limited number of superhero slots to fill, you could argue that giving one of these spots to a second Thor would be a wasted opportunity, especially so soon after Hemsworth has finished his run. Either way, we’ll likely find out if the original Thor has any further adventures left in him when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
