Tessa Thompson Wants An All-Female Superhero Movie With Captain Marvel

Earlier this month, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson stated that she was “super into” the idea of an all-female Avengers movie. Before that, the suggestion had come up multiple times in discussions with the female stars of the MCU, with Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson and Tessa Thompson all expressing an interest in recent years. And as it turns out, Thompson is still on board for the idea.

Speaking to CinemaBlend, the Thor: Ragnarok star remarked that the MCU currently has a lot of female stars that she’d like to work with, the latest addition being Captain Marvel lead Brie Larson:

“Brie is a friend, and I just like hanging out with her; and I’m so excited. Obviously it’s been a long time coming for Marvel to have a movie led by one of their female characters that exists in the canon… Last year in the press there was this whole idea that I was on Kevin Feige about doing an all-female, A-Force or something. But really it just has to do with the fact that there’s so many incredible, talented women in the MCU that I just want to work with selfishly. So I’m like, ‘Well, why not do it in the context of like fighting folks and hanging out in space?’”

Thompson went on to further discuss her friendship with Larson, and how the two of them are pretty thrilled to be part of the Marvel universe:

“Of course I would love the chance to work with Brie. We were just like, ‘Look! It’s us together!’ I think we’re both new to the MCU, so we both retain the sense of like, ‘Can you believe!?’ We’re just like, ‘What? We got capes? What’s happening?!’ We’re both really geeked out by having dolls and occupying this space. We’re like women’s women, so the idea of getting to do something that little girls are excited about, and people that identify as women feel excited about is cool. So who knows if we’ll get to do something together; it’s rad. But I’m just so happy for her, and for us and what it means culturally right now.”

So far, Valkyrie and Captain Marvel have each been in exactly one MCU film, and have yet to cross paths. Nonetheless, both Thompson and Larson recently took to social media to show their approval of a piece of fan art that showed the two heroines as a romantic couple. And though we’ve seen little-to-no evidence to suggest that Marvel Studios has such a development in mind, it’s been pretty much confirmed that the two of them will feature in next month’s Avengers: Endgame.

As for the possibility of an all-female team-up movie, while it doesn’t look like a project in this vein is on the schedule just yet, the MCU’s future is at least set to be a lot more female-heavy than its past. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige even mentioned last year that the majority of the franchise’s superheroes will soon be women. But before we find out if the studio is following through on that claim, we can see Captain Marvel and (probably) Valkyrie on our screens once more when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
