The upcoming Child’s Play reboot has been on the receiving end of some heavy backlash over the past few months, with much of the hostility coming from the fact that franchise creator Don Mancini is already set to continue in the original continuity of the series with a TV show that’s completely separate from this upcoming film.
Of course, Mancini himself has already spoken his mind on the new Child’s Play, making his thoughts on it very clear via social media, and in the wake of the first trailer dropping a while back, franchise star Jennifer Tilly also chimed in with her own less-than-ecstatic response. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming effort will end up winning over both them and the fans, but one thing it absolutely has to get right is Chucky himself.
You see, despite being the main villain, the new version of the killer doll has been kept in the shadows. The trailer only gave us fleeting looks at him, without ever letting him speak a single line. But when we finally do hear him open his mouth, the voice that comes through should be one that’s pretty familiar to most.
That’s because Deadline is reporting tonight that none other than Star Wars legend Mark Hamill has signed on for the part. Yes, Luke Skywalker himself will be voicing the demonic doll in the upcoming reboot and given how accomplished he is when it comes to voice acting, this certainly bodes well for the project.
Though he may be most well known as the face of Disney’s aforementioned sci-fi saga, Hamill has done a ton of voice work over his career. Most notably, he’s often regarded as one of the best Jokers in all of cinema/television, having voiced the character in Batman: The Animated Series among other films, shows and even video games. Anyone familiar with his take on Mr. J will be able to tell you that he’ll undoubtedly be able to bring something special to Chucky, and we can’t wait to hear what he’s got cooked up for the role.
Hamill will join an already impressive cast that boasts the likes of Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry, and we’ll find out if this strong roster of talent can win over the skeptics when Child’s Play hits theaters on June 21st, 2019.
