As the Maleficent sequel edges closer to its fall release date, it sounds like things are already starting to come together for another live-action film that seeks to humanize a popular Disney villain, with The Hashtag Show reporting that Nicole Kidman is being eyed for a part in the upcoming Cruella.
While the Big Little Lies star sounds like a ridiculously perfect choice to play the 101 Dalmatians baddie, that role has already gone to Emma Stone. Instead, it’s said that Kidman is in the running to play the “Baroness,” an antagonist to Cruella who’s thought to be pivotal in her transformation to the villain we know today. Though Kidman appears to be the favorite, she apparently isn’t the only big name who’s still in this race, with Emma Thompson, Charlize Theron, Julianne Moore and Demi Moore all believed to be on Disney’s radar for the part.
The report also offered a short synopsis, which paints a picture of “Estella” in her early years:
Estella (Cruella De Vil) lives on the streets of 1970’s London with other hoodlums, where we learn the real origins behind Estella’s hatred of Dalmatians.
While Mozart in the Jungle writer Alex Timbers was long attached to direct, the filmmaker departed the project last December due to scheduling conflicts, with Craig Gillespie of I, Tonya fame replacing him at the helm. Production on Cruella is expected to begin at the end of the year, though a release date has yet to be announced.
While we wait, the next Disney live-action film on the horizon is Dumbo, which is set for release on March 29th, followed by Aladdin on May 24th and The Lion King on July 19th. Later in the year, the trend continues with Lady and the Tramp, which comes to Disney Plus on October 4th, before Maleficent: Mistress of Evil finally hits theaters on October 18th.
