Though Captain Marvel has yet to prove itself at the box office, it’s clear that Marvel Studios intends for Carol Danvers to be one of the leading figures of the MCU’s next phase, and if you ask producer Kevin Feige, Brie Larson’s character is a heroine with serious potential.
In an interview with Screen Rant, the Marvel Studios head was asked about Captain Marvel’s future in the franchise and the possibility of a sequel, to which he offered the following cryptic tease:
“The making of a first film is in some ways a brainstorm on the future and on what can be. So what it will be again is not clear. But what it could be is pretty amazing.”
Evidently, Feige isn’t feeling ready to offer anything specifics about the studio’s plans for Captain Marvel, though Carol already has a pretty busy schedule ahead of her, starring in her solo debut this week before meeting up with her fellow superheroes in Avengers: Endgame. Beyond that, the studio may be waiting to see how audiences respond to the heroine’s first two outings before they set anything in stone, but as it stands, signs point to a sequel-worthy performance when Captain Marvel arrives in cinemas a few days from now.
So far, the social media response from early viewers to Captain Marvel has been overwhelmingly positive, and with the film outdoing Aquaman and Wonder Woman in presales more than two weeks prior to release, it’s clear that much of the filmgoing public is similarly pumped for Carol’s first feature.
Consequently, box office projections bode well for the movie, ranging from Researcher Exhibitor Relations’ domestic opening weekend forecast of $118 million, to Box Office Pro’s estimate of $160 million. The real test, however, comes when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, followed by Avengers: Endgame on April 26th.
