Captain Marvel will be the MCU’s first theatrical release since Stan Lee tragically passed away late last year, ensuring that the comic book legend’s involvement will pack a little extra emotional weight this time round. And while fans are still a couple of days away from seeing the footage for themselves, they might be wise to pack a few tissues with them before they head out to the theater to catch the flick.
Following the UK premiere of Captain Marvel earlier this week, Metro caught up with co-director Anna Boden to ask about Stan Lee’s role in the movie. From what we’ve heard, there’s going to be some kind of tribute to him and though it’s unclear whether this is in the form of one of his cameos that he shot before his death, or something else entirely, it’s apparently pretty emotional.
“I don’t want to get fired now, of all times,” said Boden. “It would be so weird if I got fired at this point in time. So I don’t want to say anything I’m not supposed to say, but just that it was… we did want to kind of have a moment and tribute to Stan Lee in this movie, obviously. It was something that came from Marvel and when they showed it to us, there was not a dry eye in the house. It was really emotional.”
Though the filmmaker wouldn’t mention anything specific about how Lee factors into the movie, it’s clear that whatever they have planned, a fair few fans might find themselves a little misty-eyed before – or perhaps at some point during, if it’s a cameo – Carol Danvers’ first big screen adventure.
Speaking of which, now that the social media embargo is up on Captain Marvel, the Brie Larson-led pic has received a glowing response online which will surely continue once the official review embargo lifts next week, on March 5th. It all bodes pretty well for its opening weekend, too, which was already the subject of promising box office projections. And you’ll be able to see for yourself what all the fuss is about when Carol arrives in theaters on March 8th.
