Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi was widely praised (or in some cases, not) for its more mature take on the Star Wars property, but according to a new rumor relayed by Now, This Is Podcasting! (via Reddit), the director’s upcoming trilogy could turn out to be surprisingly kid-friendly.
According to the show’s sources, Johnson’s next three contributions to the franchise will be geared towards a younger audience, with the report even going as far as to suggest that the trilogy could end up being G-rated. Seeing how the word “Wars” is in the very title of this series, it’s hard not to be skeptical about the new claim, especially when Johnson’s own track record – from Looper to Brick to Breaking Bad – has hardly been in a G-rated vein. At the same time, we currently have next-to-no idea what sort of story Johnson is looking to tell with his trilogy, so as unlikely as this rumor sounds, perhaps the director can still do what he’s known for and subvert our expectations.
In any case, Johnson’s trilogy sounds like it’s still a long way from going into production, with the filmmaker’s next feature Knives Out not due for release until November. In the meantime, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have reportedly been offered a trilogy of their own that they’ll begin work on once they’re finished with the final season of Game of Thrones.
As with Johnson’s trilogy, details on Benioff and Weiss’s project remain vague, though actress Emilia Clarke last year offered her prediction that the pair is going to deliver something akin to “Star Wars on acid.” That remains to be seen, but first, J.J. Abrams will be wrapping up the current trilogy when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.
