New Star Wars Novel The Skywalker Saga Announced For September Release

Disney and Lucasfilm are billing Star Wars: Episode IX as the finale of the Skywalker saga. The pitch is that it’ll finally bring to end the story that chronologically began in The Phantom Menace, showing us the lives of Anakin Skywalker and his children Luke and Leia. Their stories are the backbones of the entire Star Wars saga, with the characters’ decisions and actions having shaped the course of the universe. Now, it seems like Disney’s going to be putting the entire tale into an interesting new novel simply titled The Skywalker Saga.

It’s going to be written by New York Times bestselling author Delilah S. Dawson, most notable for her novel Star Wars: Phasma, which fleshed out a character that the movies didn’t devote too much time to. In a statement announcing the news, Dawson explained the book thusly:

THE SKYWALKER SAGA is going to be the most exquisitely bound Star Wars storybook you can imagine, with gorgeous art by Brian Rood and words by me, retelling Episodes I through VIII through the eyes of the Skywalkers themselves. We’re talking SPACE FAIRYTALE style.”

I’m still not exactly sure what that means it’ll look like, but at minimum, it seems that we’re going to get some very pretty art in a lavishly produced volume that shows us the most dramatic moments in the Skywalker Saga over the course of the films. That said, it’s baffling that this book isn’t going to include the events of Episode IX, which seems to me to rob it of a proper ending.

Dawson has gone on to explain that she hasn’t been privy to any information about the finale either, saying:

“My darlings, there are no spoilers here. I watched the same movies you did. I don’t have secret information. Inheritance doesn’t have to rely on blood. Ben Solo is a product of his mother, his mentor, his grandfather. Rey is called by Luke’s saber. That’s enough for me.”

Seems to me that if you’re going to put out a book with as authoritative a title as The Skywalker Saga you should wait until you can take on the full story. My suspicion is that this initial edition will be superseded by a deluxe edition in 2020 that includes additional material from Star Wars: Episode IX, but that remains to be seen.

The Skywalker Saga will be available on September 3rd, and if you plan on picking it up, be sure to let us know by dropping a comment down below.
