Between the upcoming Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, we’re about to see a passing of the torch in the MCU, as Carol Danvers assumes her place at the forefront of the superhero saga before the Phase 1 line-up gets a heroic sendoff.
In the latest Captain Marvel TV spot, we see an acknowledgement of this transition as Carol’s story is placed in the wider context of the franchise. “Some Are Built,” the text reads as we see footage of Tony Stark creating his Iron Man suit. “Some Are Made,” it declares as Captain America’s shown undergoing his Super Soldier treatment. “Some Are Born,” reads a third intertitle, before cutting to Thor grabbing his hammer. It’s only after the three stars of the MCU’s early years are presented that the TV spot brings Captain Marvel into the mix, as the preview invites us to “Discover What Makes A Hero.”
For Carol herself, the film will serve as a journey of self-discovery as she delves into her own past and reconnects with the memories that were lost to amnesia. Along the way, she’ll be running into none other than Nick Fury several years before he first assembled Iron Man, Captain America and Thor as part of the Avengers Initiative. In fact, given the movie’s place in the MCU timeline, Carol’s as much a predecessor to the Phase 1 heroes as she is their successor.
Though it remains to be seen whether Brie Larson’s heroine can fare as well with filmgoers as the original Avengers did, the early response to Captain Marvel has been pretty glowing so far, and you can judge for yourself if the movie’s earned all the hype when Carol’s solo debut hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
