Netflix is usually pretty secretive when it comes to viewing figures, and while that’s unlikely to change anytime soon, it seems that the numbers for their recent hit Bird Box were just too impressive not to share.
Susanne Bier’s post-apocalyptic thriller has taken the world by storm lately, with its gripping story of survival inspiring all sorts of discussion amongst viewers about the deeper meanings hidden within and just what those mysterious monsters that plague the characters might look like.
But circling back to those figures, and Netflix has now revealed that in its first week, Bird Box was viewed by 45 million people. That was back on December 28th, and with it now being January 5th, you can bet that that number is probably far higher. Especially since the film’s only been picking up more and more buzz ever since it premiered.
Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film! pic.twitter.com/uorU3cSzHR

As mentioned in their Tweet, this figure has also set a record for the platform, with 45 million being the most users that have ever watched a Netflix film in its first 7 days. As for which movies Bird Box beat out to snag that record, we don’t know, as like we mentioned above, the streaming giant doesn’t often release viewing numbers. Regardless, this is all quite impressive and now has fans wondering if they’ll get a Bird Box sequel at some point.
Indeed, it certainly seems possible. Though the film had a pretty conclusive ending, there are a number of ways the story could continue. Then again, perhaps it’s best just to leave things as they are, and not put out a follow-up just for the sake of capitalizing on the popularity of the first movie.
That’ll be a decision that Netflix has to make, but for now, it’s fair to say that the company has a bonafide hit on their hands with Bird Box, and it’ll be interesting to see where they take the property from here.
