Last week we received the shocking announcement that Sony’s developing Ghostbusters 3, a new installment in the franchise that’ll ignore the 2016 reboot and act as a true sequel to the original 80s films. Jason Reitman, son of Ghostbusters co-creator and director Ivan, will get behind the camera and at the time, we were told it’d arrive in the summer of 2020.
Now, however, we have a firm date, with Sony announcing tonight that the threequel will be with us on July 10th of the aforementioned year. And with Morbius set to hit just a few weeks later – it premieres on the 31st – it seems like it’ll be a pretty good month for the studio.
So, now that we’ve got a release date, and with it not being too far away, all eyes will begin to turn towards plot details. From what we understand, Ghostbusters 3 will see the torch pass to a new generation of much younger busters, with the story said to focus on four kids in the teen/preteen age range. That premise has seen a bit of a mixed response so far, but I guess we’ll find out if it pays off in about a year and a half.
Of course, the other big thing folks are wondering about are which of the original cast might return. Initially, we were told they’d all be back. Well, those who are still around, that is. But then Ernie Hudson cleared the air by explaining that no-one’s approached him about being in the movie yet.
As for Bill Murray, we imagine he’s probably deeply skeptical of the whole thing after his cameo in the awful 2016 reboot, and could very well be done with the series. Dan Aykroyd, meanwhile, has seemed a lot more optimistic about returning to the franchise over the years, but again, nothing’s been confirmed at the time of writing.
With Ghostbusters 3 locked in for July 10th, 2020 though, you can bet we’ll start to form a clearer picture of what to expect in no time at all.
