When we first learned that Jordan Peele of Get Out fame was spearheading a “spiritual sequel” to Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror movie Candyman, the question was soon brought up of whether or not Tony Todd would reprise his role as the titular killer, with many fans refusing to picture anyone else in the part.
So far, though, we’ve heard nothing on whether Todd will be involved in the project, though if you ask the actor himself, he doubts that they’d make the film without him. That’s encouraging to hear, but at the same time, he also admitted that he has mixed feelings about the whole thing, which he explains as follows:
“I have mixed feelings because I thought they were gonna make this 15 years ago. If this had been 10 years ago when I had heard news, I would have been devastated. I would have fought for it. Now I’m in a different place. I’ve got so many other options that even if they make it without me, which I doubt, the attention the new movie will create will lead folks back to the original [film] because people like to see the source material”.
Since the Candyman remake is still so far out from release, details on the project remain thin, and while Todd hasn’t yet discussed it with Peele, he acknowledges that the time probably isn’t right for such a conversation, saying the following in a previous interview:
“No, I haven’t talked to him yet but I know he’s a fan. They’re not going to shoot until deep this year so contracts are weird. You don’t want to get into contracts too soon because then you’re locked in.”
Again, it’s still very, very early days for the Candyman remake – sorry, spiritual sequel – but with Jordan Peele overseeing things and a talented director like Nia DaCosta calling the shots from behind the camera, we’ve certainly got high hopes for it and are eager to learn more about what they’ve got planned soon.
In the meantime, Peele’s Us will be hitting cinemas on March 15th and will undoubtedly be one of the year’s most exciting horror films.
