If you’ve never played the video game of the same name, it’s still a little hard to believe that not only is a live-action Detective Pikachu film quickly approaching, but also that the titular creature will be voiced by none other than Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. And yet here we are, with a brand new TV spot having just been released which offers another impressive look at the pic.
When these world-conquering critters first became a pop culture phenomenon a couple of decades ago, parents across the world were left confused as to what exactly Pokémon was, but now that this first generation of aspiring trainers are all grown up, it looks like Detective Pikachu will bring in a fair few nostalgic adults alongside the young ones.
What’s more, if your knowledge of the franchise doesn’t extend much beyond the Red and Blue days, you’re in luck, as it looks like the movie won’t be assuming viewers have too much background of the monsters beyond the first 150. That’s made evident in this latest promo, too, which features a number of Pokémon that should be familiar to both casual and longtime fans alike.
Regardless of how you feel about seeing these pocket monsters in live-action form, you’ve gotta wonder why it took so long for the Hollywood studios to go through with such a feat, as Detective Pikachu arrives roughly two decades after the franchise’s peak years.
Perhaps the Detective Pikachu game itself was what spurred this project into development, or maybe it was the success of Pokémon Go which helped remind Warner Bros. these creatures now hold a cherished place in the hearts of multiple generations. Then again, maybe it’s just that the property is now old enough to be nostalgic, which may explain why the promotional footage has so far kept its focus on Pokemon from the Red and Blue days.
Regardless of the reason, Detective Pikachu is shaping up to be a pretty exciting release and it looks like a fair few moviegoers will be surprising themselves a little when they make the trip to see it in cinemas from May 10th.
