Carol Danvers is ready for combat in a new Captain Marvel still shared by USA Today. The photo shows Brie Larson’s character in the Kree version of her costume, complete with the famous helmet. And as the heroine stares intently off-screen, a little bit of hair can be seen popping out the top of her headgear to form her trademark mohawk.
As you may well have witnessed from the film’s various trailers and promo art, Carol will be seen wearing at least two different superhero outfits in her big screen debut, the other being the red-and-blue design that she seems to acquire after returning to Earth. Why exactly the character would need two different color schemes is unclear, but one fan theory is that the ‘classic costume’ was the design of Phil Coulson, who wanted to recreate the patriotic colors of his hero Captain America’s outfit.
Speculation aside, Larson also spoke to USA about her character, explaining that Carol is an intriguingly flawed figure who’s struggling to uncover the mysteries of her past.
“[Carol is] not this perfect ideal of a woman,” Larson said. “She’s my perfect ideal because she’s flawed and she owns those and learns to work with them, and is making mistakes over the course of this movie finding herself – figuring out her past, but also discovering her own strength and power.”
With Carol starting the movie with her superpowers already in place, the upcoming flick won’t follow the conventional origin story formula, but it’s clear that the feature will be telling us a lot about her early years regardless, as the amnesia-stricken lead attempts to piece together her own backstory.
At the same time, the film itself is a journey into the past for the MCU, setting its story over twenty years before the events of the franchise-spawning Iron Man movie. With that in mind, fans have long been theorizing on the secrets that Captain Marvel might reveal, especially when it comes to the story’s connections to Avengers: Endgame. But whatever bombshells Carol’s first solo outing has to drop, we’ll find out when the film hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
