Among the many deaths witnessed in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s pretty obvious by now that plenty are going to be reversed in next year’s Avengers 4, including some, if not all, of the victims of Thanos’ genocidal finger-snap. That being said, the fact that Loki perished from more conventional means near the start of the movie suggests that his death may be a little more permanent than those of his dusted peers.
At the same time, Thor’s brother is certainly known for his deceptive ways, having previously faked his death in The Dark World, and this previous sequence has provided the basis for a popular theory that he’s pulling the same trick now. As many have argued, while the character’s typically seen to be right-handed, there are two reported exceptions where he appears to be a leftie: his faked death in The Dark World, and his supposed death in Infinity War.
Now, you may or may not buy into this theory, but Kevin Smith apparently thinks that it’s at least worthy of consideration, having praised the argument when it was brought up on the latest episode of the Fatman Beyond podcast.
“You’ve got a point, because I’m sitting there watching, I rewatched Infinity War again last night and I was like ‘I can’t believe they killed f*cking Loki.’”
Smith also cited Loki’s interactions with the God of Thunder as a reason to doubt that this death is legit.
“Last night when I was watching it, that’s the line I hung on, which is where he goes ‘the sun will shine on us again brother’ and then he gets killed and Thor should have been like ‘I guess you were wrong, f*ck!’ but you know, he doesn’t and that made me think like maybe there is a play here and stuff.”
Honestly, there are only so many times that Marvel can fake Loki’s death before the twist gets wearying, but with the former Avengers villain set to have his own TV show, it’s clear that we haven’t seen the last of him yet. Though it remains unclear whether the events of this planned series will serve as a sequel or prequel to Infinity War, there’s a good chance that this question will be answered by the time Avengers 4 comes out on May 3rd, 2019.
