A couple of weeks ago, the first trailer for the upcoming PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2 saw co-star Fred Savage live up to his name with a brutal swipe at Fox, comparing the studio’s Marvel output to The Beatles produced by Nickelback (“It’s music, but it sucks”). Now, in this latest preview for Once Upon a Deadpool, Julian Dennison helps to balance things out when he throws shade at Marvel Studios for the gloomy ending of Avengers: Infinity War.
The clip opens with the Firefist actor providing some context for the feature’s new family-friendly cut, explaining “Once upon a time there was a Kiwi superstar called Julian Dennison. The star of Deadpool 2, 2018’s best superhero film.” After a pregnant pause, Dennison then adds, “Nobody died at the end of that one.”
Obviously, this is a joke at the expense of the Russo Brothers’ latest film, and come to think of it, there is something pretty ironic about the Disney movie ending in mass genocide while the R-rated Deadpool 2 ultimately saw its characters resolve their issues through non-violent means, with Wade Wilson successfully convincing Firefist not to commit his first murder. Of course, this relatively peaceful conclusion comes only at the tail end of what just might be the year’s bloodiest comic book movie, hence Fox feeling the need to release a PG-13 cut.
While the fans aren’t all sold on the idea of a Deadpool flick that the kids can see in theaters, Once Upon a Deadpool does have at least one avid supporter in the Merc’s own co-creator Rob Liefeld, who took to Instagram earlier this week to heap heavy praise on the re-release. With that in mind, don’t be too surprised if the project ends up winning over a fair few cynics when it begins its two-week run in cinemas from December 12th.
