Brief Status Update On Matt Reeves’ The Batman Arrives

When Warner Bros. first set the DCEU in motion with 2013’s Man of Steel, they probably assumed that Batman and Superman would be the big name pair to really draw in the crowds for this superhero saga. Fast-forward to 2018, however, and the duo’s last film together was a box office disappointment, Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck look to have each departed from their respective roles, and the future seems far more promising for relative big screen newcomers like Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

Nonetheless, director Matt Reeves is hoping to give the Caped Crusader a fresh start with The Batman, and it seems that things are slowly but surely moving forward on the project. Heroic Hollywood editor-in-chief Umberto Gonzalez, for instance, recently tweeted the news that the latest script rewrite could be completed by the end of this month:

“BATMAN UPDATE: Matt Reeves script rewrite is due before the end of the year.”

Should this be the case, then it’s an encouraging sign that we may soon be getting a little clarification on a project that’s been plagued with rumors all year. What we’ve heard so far is that the film will be delving into the Dark Knight’s past, which means replacing Affleck with a younger actor.

In any case, amidst ongoing reports that the DCEU is being revamped, you can imagine that the Caped Crusader’s next movie will try to distance itself somewhat from the character’s less-than-beloved prior outings in the saga. And if Wonder Woman 1984 can steer clear of the events of Justice League by taking things back a few decades, then perhaps it only figures that The Batman would try the same. After all, unlike his friend Arthur Curry, Bruce can’t just escape into an underwater kingdom to avoid the wider events of this notoriously divisive cinematic universe.
