Birds Of Prey Scribe Discusses Adapting Harley Quinn And Batgirl

If you’re looking forward to the Birds of Prey movie as much as I am, then the past few months have given you much cause to geek out.

To briefly recap, the Cathy Yan-directed flick has finally been dealt a release dateMary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell were both confirmed as Huntress and Black Canary, respectively and, on top of that, Ewan McGregor has been cast as the villainous Black Mask. If you were to ask me, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is being given a great group to work with.

And now, as we wait for cameras to begin rolling, some of the talented people working on the film are actually already willing to discuss it. Chief among them is screenwriter Christina Hodson, who told ComicBook.com the following concerning the Clown Princess of Crime:

“Despite the superficial side and glitter and shininess, there is a real depth to her. She has a soulfulness and intelligence, and Margot has that. You can see that in her eyes, and not everyone can do that, and not everyone could have brought that Harley to life the way that Margot did.”

Truth be told, Hodson is very much right about Harley having depth to her. In my view, that’s become doubly accurate since she broke away from the Joker in the comic book world and went solo. From the look of it, that’ll soon happen on the live action side of things, too.

Unfortunately, this came at a price, with that being Harley bumping Barbara Gordon from the team’s lineup. On the plus side, though, Hodson’s also been tasked with penning a Batgirl solo outing for Warner Bros., something she was also not shy to hype.

“Oh I’m just super excited about it. I can say so little about this one, but I can tell you I’m having so much fun writing her. She is such a great character and so different than Harley. Yeah, I’m having a blast, and I can’t tell you any of the things that I’m doing! I’m just excited for her to be holding her own against all the other superheroes.”

If all works out and both movies prove to be successes, then, fingers crossed, I could see Babs featuring in a possible Birds of Prey sequel down the line. I don’t know about you, but it’s just not the same without her being there, no matter if it be as Batgirl or Oracle.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) arrives in theaters on February 7th, 2020.
