Avengers: Endgame Theory Explains How It May Set Up Secret Invasion

Ever since it was first announced that the upcoming Captain Marvel would see the introduction of Skrulls in the MCU, the fans have continued to present their theories on how Marvel Studios could make use of these shape-shifting beings, with much of the speculation drawing on the Secret Invasion plot from the comics. And in a new post on Reddit, a suggestion is offered for how exactly this story of infiltration and deceit might be set up over the course of Avengers: Endgame.

For their theory, user C_Kern points to a moment from the Captain Marvel trailer where Carol Danvers has been kidnapped and hung upside down. The Redditor suggests that this is actually an image from the film’s post-credits, and that the scene will show her page from Nick Fury arriving while she’s still being held captive. Unfortunately, the recent preview at CCXP seems to disprove this part of the post, in that the moment was shown to be part of a larger sequence where Carol makes her escape.

In any case, the rest of the theory argues that Nick’s distress call will be answered by the Skrulls themselves, who send one of their own to Earth disguised as Captain Marvel. In the events of Endgame, it’s said that the fake Carol will gain the trust of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and allies by assisting in the fight against Thanos (after all, the Skrulls probably aren’t too keen on the Mad Titan themselves), and at the end of the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, perhaps in the post-credits, we see the fake Carol transform back into her natural form, teasing the invasion to come.

As previously mentioned, there are some definite issues with this line of speculation, and after Carol has been so heavily built up as an important and inspirational player in the events of Endgame, you have to wonder if Disney would really have the nerve to keep her kidnapped and out of the action for the film’s entirety.

Nonetheless, the Secret Invasion saga is popular enough that the studio may well find ways of laying the groundwork for the storyline in their next couple of films. As it stands, we’ll just have to wait and find out when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, 2019, followed by Avengers Endgame on April 26th.
