Contrary to Hugh Jackman’s comments from earlier this week, much of the world still wants to see Wolverine and Deadpool share the screen, but as far the Logan lead is concerned, the timing just wasn’t right for it.
In an interview with MTV News, Jackman reflected on Ryan Reynolds’ ongoing attempts to pull him back into the X-Men franchise, and while the Australian star acknowledges that the Merc with a Mouth’s got a good thing going, it sounds like he was already halfway out the door when Wade’s series launched:
“When I saw Deadpool, I was like, wow that’s cool. It’s just a matter of time. It’s a bit like you’re at the greatest party you’ve ever been at, you’ve been dancing for an hour and a half, and then you’re just like ‘It’s time, ok. If I stay any longer, it’s gonna get ugly.’ It’s like, it’s time.”
Jackman then elaborated on this metaphor further, admitting that some part of him felt tempted to get back in the game for a Deadpool crossover, before ultimately deciding that it’s a little late to turn back:
“And on the way home, someone calls you and goes ‘THEY JUST PUT MICHAEL JACKSON ON! YOU GOTTA GET BACK HERE!’ And a little part of you goes, ‘I like Michael Jackson,’ but then you just go, I want to go to bed.”
But while Jackman’s Wolverine days are behind him, he still urges his old X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star to make the best of this opportunity:
“But I’m cheering for him. You go man. Go dance away. Go for it.”
It’s a shame to think that the one time this pair teamed up was for the most hated chapter in X-Men movie history, but after more than a decade-and-a-half playing Wolverine, you can understand why Jackman would be feeling ready to hang up the claws.
Of course, that won’t stop the fans and associates from trying to change his mind. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld, for instance, recently pleaded his case via Instagram for a Wade/Logan team-up, citing some of his own works as examples of stories that could be adapted. Reynolds, meanwhile, seemed to set his sights earlier this year on the more realistic goal of getting Jackman to play himself in the upcoming X-Force movie.
It’ll probably be a while before we hear any further news on that idea, but in the meantime, Wade Wilson has found another co-star in Fred Savage, with Once Upon a Deadpool running in cinemas for two weeks from December 12th.
