Though Breaking Bad ended its legendary run back in 2013, the show has left an indelible mark on pop culture, and its legacy continues to expand with the ongoing spinoff series Better Call Saul. So while this new report that the property is making the jump to cinemas has yet to receive official confirmation, there’s definite cause for thinking that it could actually be legit.
According to The Albuquerque Journal – relaying reports from the New Mexico Film Office – filming is scheduled to begin later this month on a Breaking Bad flick, which is currently going under the possibly temporary name of “Greenbrier.” Apparently, Sony Pictures is involved in the feature, which is said to follow “the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.”
Backing up these claims is the fact that show creator Vince Gilligan just signed a three-year overall deal with Sony. Plus, there’s arguably precedent set by AMC’s previous announcement that a trilogy of The Walking Dead movies is in the works.
Seeing how Walter White met with a fatal end in the final episode of the show, it’s unlikely that a film would dare to continue the his story, with Bryan Cranston’s character likely showing up in flashbacks at best. Instead, it seems more likely that Aaron Paul would be the lead in any feature-length outing, with the series finale seeming to leave Jesse Pinkman’s future wide open.
Of course, before the internet comes forth with what’s sure to be a wide range of responses to this development, perhaps it’s best that we wait for someone at AMC to offer their official confirmation. Until then, Breaking Bad fans may want to watch this space for more.
