After the divisive Star War: The Last Jedi gave us a surprisingly withdrawn and jaded Luke Skywalker – one who’d rather hide out on the planet of Ahch-To than join in on the fight – many fans are pining for a big screen representation of the character that brings out the fighter in him. And based on a new report from Cosmic Book News, next year’s Star Wars: Episode IX could be doing just that.
While it’s already confirmed Mark Hamill will be reprising his most famous role in the upcoming trilogy-closer, and it seems more than likely that he’ll be taking on a Force Ghost form this time, little is known about the content of his scenes. If you buy into the recent rumors, however, we could be in for more than one display of immense power from the franchise-defining hero.
While last week’s report suggested that Luke could be taking down a Star Destroyer all by himself in Episode IX, this week we’re being told that the renowned Jedi will be seen engaging in a lightsaber duel with his old man Darth Vader. Said fight will allegedly take place in a jungle setting, with Rey and Kylo Ren also present. On top of that, it’s also been reported that another scene will show Luke transforming from his younger self to the scraggly old hermit we saw on Ahch-To.
Of course, we’re currently in no permission to confirm either of these reported scenes, but they both sound pretty plausible. In particular, after the backlash received by The Last Jedi for its unexpected portrayal of Luke, there’s some pressure on writer-director J.J. Abrams to win a few disgruntled viewers back to Disney’s side, and a more fan-pleasing version of the character would certainly be one way to go about it.
In any case, we’ll find out what posthumous plans Abrams has in store for Luke when Star Wars: Episode IX is released on December 20th, 2019.
