It’s the animated sequel that no one asked for, really, and yet, Disney-Pixar is moving full steam ahead with Toy Story 4.
Once scheduled for release in the summer of 2017, the Mouse House delayed Buzz and Woody’s next big-screen adventure by a full two years after completely overhauling the screenplay – word is Disney brass tossed out around 75 percent of the initial story.
So it’s fair to say that Toy Story 4 hasn’t exactly hit the ground running, but if a new interview with Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) is any indication, Josh Cooley’s long-gestating sequel will very much be worth the wait, as its “incredibly emotional” and ambitious plot is similar to that belonging to… Avengers: Infinity War?!
Yes. I can’t believe it. I gotta resist getting emotional because I don’t wanna give it away but this is an incredibly great story. If you’re at all a big superhero fan, Infinity War – I’m a big superhero fan – that didn’t seem like it was going to work [but] it was a lot of vignettes that all made sense. This, Toy Story 4, [did that]. We’ve only been through it once, there will be several more incantations, but it is so emotional, it’s so funny, it’s so big the idea that they’ve come up with. I’m startled. [Toy Story 3] I thought was amazing. This one, I couldn’t even get through the last scene, okay?
And while production is beginning to enter the final stages, Allen refused to be drawn about Toy Story 4‘s final scene – the only thing he did reveal is that he found it incredibly difficult to get through due to the movie’s poignant, heartrending finale.
Surely it couldn’t be as much of a tear-jerker as the third act of Toy Story 3? Here’s what the actor told The Talk (h/t People):
I’d love to be a Washington leaker, but I just can’t do it. I can’t give it any more away. They’ve got great characters, but a couple of the scenes towards the end were really hard to get through.
As things stand, and after swapping release dates with The Incredibles sequel, Toy Story 4 has been earmarked for release on June 21st, 2019 – exactly one week after Sony’s star-studded Men in Black reboot.
