Horror fans are willing to die on the hill of defending sequels, even if they know they’re terrible

No infamous and immortal horror franchise is complete without some lackluster sequels. As always, the original is favored above the mediocre attempts at continuation. Eventually, after around three or four sequels, the whole endeavor feels tainted — like beating a dead horse. Sometimes, once in a blue moon, a sequel will match or if not surpass the resounding success of its predecessor, even if it takes a few tries to achieve as such. With these subpar sequels, there comes faithful fanatics who would happily die on the hill of defending them, even if they’re complete and undeniable stinkers.

We’re well aware that horror franchises like Halloween, Friday the 13th and Child’s Play have been around since the ’70s and ’80s, continuously pumping out sequels without a single care for the storyline itself and instead a full focus on the money-making potential. As the film industry has taught us well, if there’s an audience for something, it sells. Sadly, many franchises have been done to death, but greedy corporations will kill an idea until it’s six feet under so long as it draws in a profit. Thankfully, there will always be fans whose guilty pleasures are awful follow-ups.

A star-studded thriller that tried and failed to be all things at once dishes out tough justice on Netflix

Biting off more than you can chew might have descended into cliche a long time ago, but there’s a reason why; it’s a phrase that applies to every single aspect of our existence. Extending to cinema, there’s been a large number of movies attempting to stuff a handful of genres into a single story to try and be all things to all people, but the reception to 2006’s Freedomland reiterates why the results are often lacking.

Director Joe Roth tries to incorporate strands of mystery thriller, police procedural, intimate drama, social parable, media intrusion, and an examination of racial tensions all at once, only for a 23 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and 25 percent user rating to put an exclamation point on how badly it missed the mark on all fronts. In fact, the aggregation site even describes Freedomland as “poorly directed and overacted” in its summary. Ouch.

‘Star Wars’ provides the detailed backstory nobody asked for about a super obscure Yoda prop

Star Wars is notorious for the depth of its canon. Every character who appeared on-screen in the original trilogy has a fully fleshed-out backstory, from the droids on sale in A New Hope, to every inhabitant of Jabba’s Palace, right down to the guy lugging an ice cream maker through the streets of Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back. But it doesn’t stop there, as the upcoming book, Star Wars: 100 Objects, will give a backstory and explanation to weapons, armor, and other key items from across the saga.

Promising that “each has its own compelling story to tell”, the book will explain how iconic items like Darth Vader’s mask came to be, as well as the cultural significance of a Tusken gaffi stick or the tale of a specific Clone Trooper helmet. The book was teased at New York Comic-Con over the weekend, where a page explaining all we need to know about Yoda’s ‘Blissl’ was revealed.

The Imperial Inquisitors are one of the smartest additions to Star Wars. In Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rebels, and Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order (and also in many comics and novels) we’ve seen the Jedi that survived Order 66 struggling to keep their true identity hidden as the Empire hunts them down. Darth Vader is their biggest fear, but even he can’t be everywhere at once and he relies on the Inquisitors to tie up loose ends.

We saw the Inquisitors in action in Obi-Wan Kenobi, with ambitious Inquisitor Reva obsessed with capturing Anakin’s former Master. Reva’s story appeared to end with her turning to the Light, though a new female Inquisitor may leave the much-criticized character in the dust.

Barring the question of whether Bruce Banner’s blood can be considered such an item, the latest example we’ve seen out of the MCU is Mjolnir — the hammer that first brought Thor Odinson into the arena back in 2011 and later found itself in the worthy grip of Jane Foster over a decade later in Thor: Love and Thunder. Sadly, her time as the Mighty Thor was short-lived, leaving Mjolnir without a permanent hand to inhabit as Stormbreaker continues to give it the “don’t even think about it” side-eye.
