Even Stephen King diehards can’t defend the ‘Firestarter’ remake

The fresh and fiery adaptation of Firestarter simultaneously released in theaters and on Peacock yesterday, and while author and concept creator Stephen King has offered up his praise, diehard fans are certainly finding faults in the Zac Efron vehicle. The remake of the 1984 original tells the story of a father who attempts to protect his daughter — who possesses pyrokinesis — from an enigmatic agency seeking to seize her.

Over on Twitter, the overall response to the 2022 adaptation has been nothing short of underwhelming, as folks are taking to the app to express their dissatisfaction with the film based on King’s 1980 novel. This backlash even includes many popular sites, such as IGN, determining that the movie “failed to ignite” upon its anticipated release.

One user listed bullet points for the movie, where they expressed their discovery of the movie, only to then state that it was bad.

Another user profoundly summed up the film in one single word.

Another user sought to praise John Carpenter’s brilliant score, but then proceeded to slander the film’s script, acting, and direction as a whole.

One user criticized Firestarter for its lackluster ability to choose a genre, and instead only praised the film’s score.

One final user was as blunt as one can possibly be.

Along with the online backlash, reviews from critics are even worse, with many dubbing it as one of the worst film adaptations of King’s work. That being said, with projects like Salem’s Lot on the horizon, there’s still plenty to look forward to for diehard fans of the renowned author.

‘The Batman’ concept art reveals Penguin almost wore mustard yellow

Concept artist Adam Brockbank has posted some early designs from Matt Reeves’ The Batman that literally paints Colin Farrell’s Penguin in a different light.

As we know, Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot is one of several archenemies of Robert Pattinson’s Batman; seeking to rise up the ranks of Gotham’s criminal hierarchy and become the city’s newest crime boss. In the film, Oz is a lieutenant of the Falcone crime family, under investigation from Batman and Jim Gordon after potential clues linked him to the murders committed by the Riddler.

As everyone knows, Penguin is often seen wearing a tailcoat tuxedo, complete with a bow tie and a top hat. Traditionally, he also has a beak-shaped nose (hence the nickname) and a monocle. Although Farrell’s iteration lacks the sophistication of his comic book counterpart, he does sport the same fur coats and pinstripe suits.

Brockbank’s art looks way more like the handsome Farrell we’ve come to love over the years than the finished product that buried the actor under prosthetics, which is surely destined for an Oscar nomination in the makeup category at the very least. He captioned the photo, “Another day, another Penguin”, and you can see the artwork below.

In the images, Farrell dons the same slicked-back hair as seen in Matt Reeves’ adaptation, but it somehow looks neater and more well-groomed than the sleazy, overweight and unattractive Penguin that made it to the big screen. Would it be fair to say that this version looks a lot less threatening than the other one? Maybe that’s why they chose the hideous appearance after all.

MCU fans wonder what ‘Doctor Strange 2’ means for Agatha Harkness

This article contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness stole the show in WandaVision with her entertaining brand of villainy and toe-tapping theme song. The character was such a hit that she’s getting her very own spinoff: Agatha: House of Harkness, likely due in mid-2023.

Now fans are wondering how the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, specifically Wanda’s fate, will impact Agatha. WandaVision ended with Wanda casting a mind-control spell on her, consigning her to live as ‘Agnes’ the bubbly sitcom personality she’d invented for herself.

r/MarvelStudios is currently debating whether Wanda’s (apparent) death will mean this spell is lifted, or whether the destruction of the Darkhold will push her back towards the light. We can surmise that Agatha: House of Harkness will somehow see her released from Wanda’s spell, though a reply points out that the show underlines that once a spell is cast it can’t be broken.

If that’s the case, the death of the spell caster won’t affect the spell itself, which also lines up with Doctor Strange’s explanation that his spell to protect the Time Stone in Avengers: Infinity War will be unaffected by Ebony Maw killing him.

Some also theorize that House of Harkness will see Wanda and Agatha reunite. Agatha’s closing words to Wanda in WandaVision were, “You’ve no idea what you have unleashed. You’re gonna need me.” and of all the characters, Agatha will probably be less judge-y about the whole murderous rampage thing.

We may get a hint when Agatha: House of Harkness starts filming in the fall, so watch this space.

In the meantime, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now in theaters.

Fans already knew ‘Dune’ newcomer Christopher Walken was emperor of the universe

The news that Christopher Walken will star in the role of the emperor in Dune: Part Two came as no surprise to fans.

Eagle-eyed fans saw the casting of Walken in the role of Shaddam Corrino IV, the 81st Padishah Emperor of the Known Universe, as the fulfillment of a prophecy from the video for the Fatboy Slim song “Weapon of Choice“. The twenty-year-old clip was directed by Spike Jonze and features Walken dancing to the song, which contains a predictive quote from Frank Herbert’s Dune, “Walk without rhythm, and it won’t attract the worm.”

Fans have taken to social media to talk about Walken’s casting in the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Academy Award-winning science fiction epic Dune, describing it as a full-circle moment.

The connection between Walken’s casting and his turn in “Weapon of Choice” was a source of delight.

News of Walken’s casting even saw one fan call Fatboy Slim a prophet.

Yet another fan saw seemed to think of Walken’s casting as a classic example of manifesting the heart’s desire.

Another fan simply stated that Walken was already the Emperor of the Known Universe.

Walken will be joining Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, and Rebecca Ferguson for the second installment. Other newcomers to the sequel are Florence Pugh in the role of Princess Irulan and Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha, the nephew of the odious Baron Harkonnen.

Dune: Part Two will start shooting this summer in Budapest.

Watch: Apple TV Plus unveils first teaser for new animated movie ‘Luck’

Apple TV Plus has been on a serious hot streak lately, having put out a whole bunch of incredible shows and scoring the Best Picture Oscar for CODA. Now they’re gunning for Disney’s crown, with the first teaser for the upcoming animated exclusive Luck giving us some serious Pixar vibes.

Then again, this isn’t surprising given that John Lasseter was (controversially) installed as Skydance’s head of animation in 2019.

The story of the film follows the activities of a secret department devoted to doling out good and bad luck. In the trailer, Scottish black cat Bob (voiced by Simon Pegg) gives us a quick tour of the facility, explaining that one of the keys to the department’s success is that no human has ever set foot inside… so you can imagine what’s about to happen.

Eva Noblezada voices Sam, described in the synopsis as “the unluckiest person in the world,” who journeys through the Land of Luck in an attempt to reverse her fortunes. Along the way, she’ll meet The Dragon (Jane Fonda), The Captain (Whoopi Goldberg), and ‘Rootie’ (voiced by John Ratzenberger).

That last bit of casting has to be a shot across Pixar’s bows, as Ratzenberger is indelibly associated with the company and had a role in their first 22 movies (most notably Hamm in the Toy Story series). The idea of a metaphysical concept turning out to be a regimented bureaucracy is also extremely Pixar, as seen in Monsters Inc, Inside Out, Coco, and Soul.

It remains to be seen whether Luck has what it takes to compete against Pixar’s wonders, something we’ll find out when the film releases later this year. More as we hear it.

MCU fans still can’t decide if ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ is worthy of a reappraisal

Joss Whedon was on a high after The Avengers. The first full MCU crossover grossed an astonishing $1.5 billion at the box office and cemented Marvel Studios as one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster factories. After this, signing up Whedon for its sequel, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron was a no-brainer.

Sadly things didn’t quite work out. While the movie did gross $1.4 billion, many consider it a missed opportunity and a low point for the MCU. Whedon ended up in a conflict with Kevin Feige about the direction of the movie, which was followed by him parting ways with the studio.

But now, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness resolving Wanda Maximoff’s story, fans are reappraising Age of Ultron.

Some are saying it just gets overshadowed by better movies:

That they’re invested:

Some know it’s unpopular but still like it:

A few are even ready to look past Whedon’s well-chronicled history of misogynistic behaviour.

But the overwhelming consensus is that Age of Ultron falls far short of MCU’s usual parameters of greatness.

It’s also been named as the originating source of the MCU’s worst plotlines:

Some also called out Whedon’s influence as the reason for its flaws.

And many simply can’t get past the fact that it was Whedon’s creation.

Let’s face it, while Age of Ultron isn’t a complete cinematic disaster — there are a couple of good scenes, James Spader is a commendable villain, and the dream sequences are quite fun — there is no denying that some truly cringy moments involving Black Widow have aged terribly.

In case, you are planning to add your input to the debate above, you can refresh your memories by watching Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is available to stream on Disney Plus.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ writer reveals comic book inspirations behind secret guest star

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

John Krasinski made a shocking appearance as Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange 2, for which screenwriter Michael Waldron partially credits legendary comic book writer Jonathan Hickman.

In an interview with Murphy’s Multiverse, Waldron shouted out Hickman, saying that the top-secret guest star’s Doctor Strange 2 character arc was derived from his comics – specifically, the stories “of the Illuminati and how they dealt with Incursions.”

He also mentioned how Hickman’s work impacted – at least on an indirect level – how Krasinski approached the role.

“I still have to be deliberately cagey for one more weekend about the specifics about these actors and everything, but it was really trying to draw on that Hickman version of that, of the Illuminati and how they dealt with Incursions. That specific character I love, deeply and was excited to collaborate with that actor on and how to bring him to life.”

Despite admitting that he’d drawn plenty of influence and inspiration from the printed page when it came to introducing and establishing Kraskinski’s version of Reed Richards, Waldron claims he has no idea what the future holds for the stretchy superhero, who was of course turned into spaghetti by the Scarlet Witch before having his head popped in brutal fashion, saying that it was “a question for someone else”.

Fans had endorsed Krasinski as their number one choice for the part years ago, so it would be an understatement to say the house was brought down when The Office and A Quiet Place alum dropped by unexpectedly to give the people exactly what they were clamoring to see, even if it didn’t turn out like anyone was expecting.

Until that very important question gets answered, then, you can check out Krasinski’s Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange 2, which is playing in theaters everywhere.

Sam Raimi and Kevin Feige are to thank for ‘Doctor Strange 2’ insanity

When Sam Raimi signed up for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness many worried his signature style would be left by the wayside. After all, he was coming to a film already deep into pre-production, Marvel Studios are known for encouraging directors to work within their house style, and Raimi himself said “the job is to complete mile 16 of a bridge that had been under construction for 15 years.”

All those fears proved baseless, with the final product so much of a Sam Raimi movie that many fans even dubbed it the real Evil Dead 4. Now writer Michael Waldron, during a chat with Entertainment Weekly, has given us a better idea of the production process and how Raimi’s input helped steer the tone of the movie as well as broke many ‘rules’ of the MCU.

“Yeah, and that’s all Sam and Kevin. I had the freedom to write crazy s— because I knew that Sam was gonna do it, and it’d look awesome. So much of the crazy, awesome stuff in the movie isn’t even stuff that I wrote. It’s just stuff that Sam did and found on the day. It was my job to give him a blueprint, and that’s all he needed.”

Multiverse of Madness will likely see a home release sometime in late June/early July and we’re hoping for some BTS information showing us what happened during the shift between directors. It’s notable that there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between Marvel Studios and original director Scott Derrickson, so we may see him turn up to talk about why they abandoned his vision for the sequel.

But the real meat will be in Raimi’s contributions, especially how he managed to squeeze so much of his distinctive horror style into the movie. It’s difficult to imagine the “Dreamwalking” sequence, or the zombie Strange scene being half as good without his input, so him talking us through these particularly spectacular moments would be a treat.

More on the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness home release as we hear it, but right now the movie is still available for viewing in theaters.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ has MCU fans worried that House of M is coming

This article contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brought Wanda Maximoff’s MCU arc to an end. Since her debut in Age of Ultron, she’s been one of the most volatile heroes, beginning her tenure as a villain, then partially responsible for the Sokovia Accords at the heart of Civil War, and being forced to make an absolutely brutal choice in Avengers: Infinity War.

Wanda didn’t cope with this well, enslaving a town in WandaVision to let her live out her fantasy life, then going completely off the deep end in Multiverse of Madness trying to get it back. The film ends with her apparent death, though tellingly we never see a body.

This has fans hoping that one day we’ll see one of her most notorious comics arcs come to the big screen: ‘House of M’. In this, Wanda suffers yet another catastrophic mental breakdown as she tries to screw with reality to recreate her lost children. At the end of the story, she utters the iconic words “No more mutants”, instantly stripping the majority of the world’s mutants of their powers.

While some are on board:

Most are saying that Kevin Feige should avoid adapting it at all costs:

Many have concluded that those pushing for it haven’t actually read it:

Others say it’s just known because of that one memorable line:

We have to agree. Much of this storyline has already been (sort of) covered in WandaVision. Anyway, one of the key factors behind the storyline is that the Marvel Comics universe was over-stuffed with mutants and editorial decided they needed a clear out. The MCU hasn’t even introduced the X-Men yet, so Wanda immediately getting rid of them just doesn’t make sense.

But hey, we’re sure she’ll be back before too long. Maybe she can finally end up on the side of a lunchbox again?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now in theaters.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ has fans naming the gnarliest PG-13 movies they’ve ever seen

For years, Marvel Studios had billed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as its take on a horror movie, and the final product delivered the goods. Sam Raimi’s direction included heaping helpings of The Evil Dead, some genuinely spooky supernatural action, and an unstoppably terrifying villain.

Along the way, there were some seriously violent deaths and gross imagery, with fans praising Raimi for going right to the limit of what can be shown in a PG-13 movie. With Multiverse of Madness still fresh in their minds, Fim Twitter has been discussing other moments that pushed the boundaries.

Warning that some gross images follow.

Will Mavity of Maverick’s Movies was first to kick off the discussion with examples from Casino Royale, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, and The Mummy.

Gravity is a great candidate for not pulling its punches.

Several people also named Andy Serkis getting eaten by bugs in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, with some saying they can’t rewatch the movie because of this one scene.

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy also makes a couple of appearances.

Bond movie License to Kill was singled out.

And there were some nods to animated movies in Watership Down and Princess Mononoke.

There’s also many people naming Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the film for which the PG-13 rating was invented in the first place.

All are very fun watches, then, with a common thread that one mark of a good director is to skate as close to the edge of R as possible. The trick for many of these is to imply violence rather than show it, while being careful not include too much actual blood onscreen at any one time.

Here’s hoping Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness isn’t the last time Marvel Studios works with Sam Raimi, as it seems that the two mesh very well together.

Julian Hilliard and Elizabeth Olsen rub shoulders in BTS ‘Doctor Strange 2’ photo

It’s darkly funny that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hit theaters over Mother’s Day weekend. Without spoiling too much, the driving force of the movie is Elizabeth Olsen/Scarlet Witch’s grief after the events of WandaVision and the lengths she’ll go to be a mom to her kids Billy and Tommy.

This leads her to some very dark places, not that you’d think so in this adorable (but also slightly creepy) picture posted by Billy actor Julian Hilliard:

Anyone who’s seen the movie will know that Wanda takes the concept of family very seriously, with the streak of blood down her face here adding a very creepy element to the image. Hilliard (and Tommy actor Jett Klyne) are great in the movie as Wanda’s kids, particularly when they start to realize their beloved mom might not be quite who they think during the “dreamwalking” sequence.

It’s unknown whether Billy and Tommy will reappear in the MCU. While their comics counterparts Wiccan and Speed have gone on to have long superhero careers, the events of the film may relegate them to alternate dimensions rather than the core MCU.

Then again, in the comics, Billy and Tommy have a very complicated magical backstory and have been deleted and brought back into existence a couple of times over the years. Plus, with the MCU now full of multiple afterlives, evil books, and various kinds of crazy magic, the possibilities are open for pretty much anything.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now in theaters.

‘Spy Kids’ finds itself being showered with unexpected praise by fans

2001’s Spy Kids is a low-key classic. Prior to this, director Robert Rodriguez was known for his violent action movies, but somehow he managed to maintain his distinctive style even when making a movie for kids. Now the first movie is getting a moment in the sun on social media, with a short clip picking up a ton of praise.

This is the flashback to Antonio Banderas’ Gregory and Carla Gugino’s Ingrid falling in love and getting married, which basically crams a whole damn rom-com into two minutes (plus a helicopter action scene!). It’s a masterclass of quick storytelling, editing, and acting. Check it out:

Twitter clearly agrees. @TheDejaKing says that you simply don’t see movies shot like this anymore:

Others just want this clip to be expanded into a feature-length movie:

Some are pointing out the cool background details like the bridesmaid and a peek at the legendary Danny Trejo as Machete:

And, let’s face it, Gregory and Ingrid kinda make regular parents seem a bit boring:

Fortunately for all the nostalgic fans, Spy Kids will return soon. In March, we learned that Netflix is teaming up with Skydance and Robert Rodriguez for a reimagined new entry. The last entry was 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, which didn’t live up to the quality of the original movies. However, things improved with Netflix’s 2018 animated show Spy Kids: Mission Critical, which bodes well for the future.

Here’s hoping the new version comes back with a bang and that Rodriguez can capture the same magic that made the original so special.

Spy Kids is available to stream at the usual places. More on the new entry as we hear it.
