Apple reportedly using cheaper iPhone battery parts to offset 5G cost

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Facing higher production costs due to the inclusion of 5G hardware in this year’s “iPhone 12” series, Apple is attempting to use less expensive components in other areas, according to analyst Ming-chi Kuo (via MacRumors and AppleInsider). One of the biggest cost reductions is believed to come from battery technology; Kuo says Apple is reducing the number of layers in the battery board and placing cell components in a smaller area.

This will result in a battery board that’s 40 to 50 percent cheaper than the iPhone 11’s equivalent part, according to Kuo, and next year’s iPhone batteries will get a further 30 to 40 percent price decrease due to additional design changes. Apple is also said to be trimming battery costs for a third-generation...

How The Flash Will Tie Into Crisis On Infinite Earths

The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” was a huge deal, as it explored the concept of a DC multiverse for the first time in live-action, connecting various pre-existing franchises together in the process. The DCEU is now set to follow suit with 2022’s The FlashWe already knew that Michael Keaton would be reprising his portrayal of Batman from the Tim Burton movies in the Ezra Miller vehicle, and today, we got official confirmation that Ben Affleck will also be back as Bruce Wayne.

Director Andy Muschietti revealed the bombshell in an interview with Vanity Fair. As for how it’ll feature two separate versions of the Dark Knight, the filmmaker explained that The Flash will open the doors to a “a unified multiverse” that brings together all these different iterations of the same characters.

“This movie is a bit of a hinge in the sense that it presents a story that implies a unified universe where all the cinematic iterations that we’ve seen before are valid,” Muschietti said. “It’s inclusive in the sense that it is saying all that you’ve seen exists, and everything that you will see exists, in the same unified multiverse.”

For anyone who’s seen “Crisis,” Muschietti’s words are very familiar. It’s clear that the Scarlet Speedster’s solo film will actually be piggybacking off what The CW crossover event already established – that the DCEU and the Burtonverse, as well as many others, are part of the same multiverse.

The opening montage of the first episode of “Crisis” included a scene set on Earth-89, with the presence of Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl) confirming it as the Burtonverse. In episode 4, Ezra Miller dropped by for a shocking cameo, where he encountered Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen in the Speed Force. It’s been revealed that Warner Bros. requested Miller’s appearance and now we know that’s because they had plans to build on what “Crisis” established in The Flash.

We shouldn’t expect as many crossovers and cameos as in “Crisis,” but it’s likely that there are even more familiar faces in The Flash on top of Keaton and Affleck. Will WB return the favor and invite Gustin aboard? Anything’s possible.

Batman Fans Are Going Wild Over Ben Affleck Returning In The Flash

Ben Affleck is coming back as Batman! No, not just via the Justice League Snyder Cut. We got word this afternoon that the Batman V Superman star will be reprising his role as the DCEU’s original Dark Knight in The FlashThis was confirmed by director Andy Muschietti in an interview with Vanity Fair, following We Got This Covered’s scoop last month, and now it’s 100% official. And, as you can imagine, the news has broken the internet.

Affleck’s gone from a controversial choice to play the character when he was first announced to a widespread favorite in the role amongst the fans, many of whom were crushed when it seemed like he would only get the two and a bit movies (BvS, JL and his Suicide Squad cameo) to give us his take on the hero. So, the announcement that he’ll be teaming up with Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen again for The Flash has DC lovers ecstatic, and here are just some of the reactions going around on Twitter.

There’s a lot of shock out there, for one.

And happiness. There’s a whole lot of that, too.

And tears.

All the DC announcements we’re getting lately are straight out of fans’ dreams. Anything is possible!

That trickster!

For others, the biggest thing to celebrate is that Affleck’s in a much better place than he was a few years ago. Congrats, Ben!

Remember, Michael Keaton is also in The Flash, and Robert Pattinson’s The Batman comes out next year.

So… When are we getting that Batfleck movie?

He really did.

Warner Bros., you know what you need to do next.

We’ve been promised that Affleck will have a “substantial” role to play in the movie. As one person above quotes, Muschietti has teased that Bruce and Barry will form a bond over the death of their mothers. And fans will surely know that Barry’s grief over the loss of his mom will lead to him changing the past, bringing about the Flashpoint timeline in the process.

Tell us, though, how excited are you for Ben Affleck’s return as Batman in The Flash? Join the discussion in the comments section.

Android 11 phones will summon Android Auto wirelessly, no need to pull out your device

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Apple CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto both seem pretty useful for drivers — simply plug in your phone to charge, and it’ll link up with your car’s bigger touchscreen to give you directions to your doctor’s appointment, play music from your Spotify playlist, or send a text. Google also has an easier version that lets you connect wirelessly to your car stereo without even taking your phone out of your pocket — but it was limited to Google and Samsung phones. Now, Google has quietly announced that any phone running Android 11 will be able to connect to Android Auto, cable-free.

Google’s updated Android Auto support page now notes that “any smartphone with Android 11.0” will be able to connect to Android Auto wirelessly. It’s likely in...

Taiwan plans to ban major Chinese video streaming services

Photo by Sam Byford / The Verge

Taiwan is planning to lock out video streaming services from Chinese tech giants Baidu and Tencent. While such services are ostensibly already illegal in the self-governing island republic, Baidu’s iQiyi and Tencent’s WeTV currently operate under a legal loophole that allowed them to partner with local companies. Now, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs says that Taiwanese companies won’t be able to provide these services as of September 3rd.

The move shows how Chinese tech companies are facing increasing difficulty in pushing into other markets as geopolitical tensions continue to rise. President Trump has moved to ban Tencent’s WeChat and ordered ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok’s US operations, while India blocked dozens more...

A Forgotten Charlize Theron Film Hits Hulu Next Month

Charlize Theron occupies a rare space in Hollywood because not only is she widely recognized as one of the finest actresses of her generation, having won an Academy Award, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for her transformative performance in Monster and scored further nominations from the same bodies for her work in North Country and Bombshell, but the 45 year-old is also regarded as one of cinema’s premiere action stars.

Not a lot of talents can pull off the jump between critically-acclaimed dramas and action-packed blockbusters, but Theron made it look easy in the likes of Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, The Fate of the Furious and most recently Netflix’s smash hit The Old Guard. You can fully understand why she was furious about being offered the role of Wonder Woman’s mother when she could quite easily have played the title character herself.

aeon flux

That being said, not all of her entries in the action genre have been home runs, and one of her more forgotten efforts is set to land on Hulu next month. Aeon Flux had decent pedigree, with Theron headlining the 2005 live-action adaptation of the cult favorite animated series, with rising star Karyn Kusama behind the camera in what was her follow-up to breakout feature-length debut Girlfight.

However, the highly-stylized movie didn’t find much love with critics and holds a weak 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it didn’t fare much better with audiences either after earning just $52m at the box office against a $65m budget. Theron did the best she could with the material, but there were far too many issues in the story department to salvage Aeon Flux, and it’ll be interesting to see if her recent successes will result in the movie finding a new audience when it arrives on Hulu.
