Watch: Magik Goes Toe To Toe With Demon Bear In New Mutants Clip

Josh Boone’s superhero film The New Mutants is set to arrive in select theaters starting August 28th. And in order to get fans riled up for the flick, 20th Century Fox has uploaded yet another new clip from the movie, this one showing Anya Taylor-Joy’s character Magik facing off against a supervillain known as Demon Bear.

For those of you who are not aware of the source material, The New Mutants will tell the story of a group of youngsters burdened with specific superpowers. It’s slated to be the last film in Fox’s X-Men franchise, which includes beloved outings like Logan as well as not so beloved movies like Dark Phoenix.

Stellar action aside, the spinoff stars two exciting up-and-coming actresses. Maisie Williams, who plays Wolfsbane, achieved international stardom when she landed the role of Arya Stark in HBO’s long-running though recently-finalized fantasy epic Game of Thrones. Taylor-Joy, meanwhile, played leading roles in Split and Emma.

Of course, The New Mutants has taken quite a while to arrive. Though initially set to be with us in 2016, production was temporarily halted when Disney began taking over 20th Century Fox. Finally, as post-production was wrapping up, the coronavirus pandemic forced movie theaters around the world to close. Disney decided to wait for an opportunity to get it into the cinema, though, rather than exploring other avenues.

That opportunity has now come, though not without its toll on the talent involved. Appearing at a digital rendition of Comic-Con earlier this summer, director Boone and company commented on the film’s lengthy road to a theatrical release and acknowledged that fans online had been referring to the pic as cursed, fearing it might never appear before an audience. But at long last, The New Mutants will be with us later this month.

Go read how the US government built a top-secret iPod right under Steve Jobs’ nose

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

For a period of time starting in 2005, Apple allowed two US government contractors to work in its offices to develop a custom version of the iPod — but exactly what that iPod would do was a mystery, and remains so today, as shared in this fascinating story by former iPod engineer David Shayer that you should go read.

The story starts off like a novel:

It was a gray day in late 2005. I was sitting at my desk, writing code for the next year’s iPod. Without knocking, the director of iPod Software—my boss’s boss—abruptly entered and closed the door behind him. He cut to the chase. “I have a special assignment for you. Your boss doesn’t know about it. You’ll help two engineers from the US Department of Energy build a special iPod. Report only...

Instagram launches QR codes globally, letting people open a profile from any camera app

Instagram

Instagram is bringing QR codes to the app. Users can now generate QR codes that’ll be scannable from any supporting, third-party camera apps. It first launched the product in Japan last year. The idea is that businesses can print their QR code and have customers scan it to open their Instagram account easily. From there, people can see store hours, buy items, or just follow the account.

To generate your QR code, go to the settings menu on your profile and tap QR code. You might still see Nametag there, but eventually, it’ll become QR code. You can then save or share the image. Instagram previously deployed a similar system called Nametags, which were internal QR-like codes that could only be scanned from the Instagram camera. It’s now...

US President Donald Trump, belatedly realizing that the US Postal Service is far more popular than he will ever be, has been publicly distancing himself from his administration’s efforts to cut costs at the post office. Today, he told Twitter that actually, it was all Amazon’s fault:

This is well-trod ground for the president, who appears to be frightened by Jeff Bezos. In 2018, President Trump apparently wanted to double the amount t...

Does your Netflix home screen — you know, the one with your user profiles — now have a “Shuffle Play” button?

That’s because Netflix is actually planning to bring a shuffle feature to its collection of streaming movies and TV shows, letting you avoid yet another argument with your spouse/housemate/partner/etc about what you’ll be watching this evening. The company tells us it’s actually been running this test since July.

The company is already testing a few potential ways the feature might look, including the “Play Something”...

Here are the Samsung devices getting three generations of Android updates

Photo by Becca Farsace / The Verge

Samsung has confirmed exactly which of its devices will be receiving “three generations” of Android updates, after announcing the initiative at its Note 20 launch event earlier this month. As expected, the list includes flagship phones going back to last year’s Galaxy S10, but there are also a couple of new inclusions from Samsung’s foldable and tablet ranges.

In the past, Samsung generally promised two years of updates, but now its phones could be supported for as many as three, depending upon how the company defines “generations.” For example, Samsung says its Galaxy S20 phones will receive “three OS upgrades starting with Android 11,” meaning that unless Android’s naming or release schedule changes the phones should go on to receive...

Oracle is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok’s US business

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Oracle has expressed an interest in acquiring TikTok, according to the Financial Times, giving Microsoft a potential competitor in its bid to control the Chinese social video app in the US. Larry Ellison’s enterprise software giant has reportedly held preliminary talks with TikTok’s parent company ByteDance already, working with venture capital firms including General Atlantic and Sequoia Capital, and is “seriously considering” acquiring its business in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

President Trump issued an executive order on Friday ordering ByteDance to sell its US business within 90 days. The FT notes that Oracle’s billionaire co-founder Ellison is one of the few US tech executives who has been openly supportive of...

Kevin Hart And Will Smith To Star In Planes, Trains & Automobiles Remake

Paramount Pictures is planning to remake the 1987 John Hughes classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, and they’ve got Will Smith and Kevin Hart in the lead roles. Both actors will also produce under each of their production companies and Aeysha Carr will make her directorial debut as well as write the screenplay. Her previous credits include producing shows like The Carmichael Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the upcoming series Woke.

The original film stars Steve Martin and John Candy as complete strangers who couldn’t be more opposite and are forced to travel together to make it home for Thanksgiving. In addition to being possibly the greatest Thanksgiving movie ever (and a staple in my household), it presents a heartwarming story along with all of the slapstick humor. Candy, in particular, is tremendous and Martin often cites the pic as being his favorite of the films he’s made.

Both Smith and Hart have lots of experience starring in buddy movies, of course, so that won’t be a problem. But again, they have huge shoes to fill. It’s been more than 30 years since the original came out so we might be due, but it’s still a risky proposition.

Planes Trains Automobiles

It makes sense for Paramount, too. As one of the five major studios, they’re certainly coming in last in terms of relevancy and success over the past decade. After inexplicably selling the rights to both Iron Man and Captain America to Marvel and Disney, it’s been a struggle to find lucrative franchises for them.

Transformers has seen a decline both in quality and box office business with each entry and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was gone after just two movies. If it wasn’t for Tom Cruise and both Mission: Impossible and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, they might be totally irrelevant.

With any luck, then, this remake of Planes, Trains & Automobiles will turn out to be a hit for them and perhaps even spawn a franchise.

Apple tells Epic ‘we won’t make an exception’ for Fortnite

Apple has responded to Epic Games’ latest salvo in the ongoing dispute between the two companies. Epic had said that Apple is threatening to revoke its access to iOS and Mac developer tools by removing it from the Apple Developer Program unless it cuts a rule-violating payment processing option that it snuck into Fortnite.

“We very much want to keep the company as part of the Apple Developer Program and their apps on the Store,” Apple says in a statement to The Verge. “The problem Epic has created for itself is one that can easily be remedied if they submit an update of their app that reverts it to comply with the guidelines they agreed to and which apply to all developers.”

The Expendables Star Celebrates The Film’s 10th Anniversary

It’s been 10 years since the world was introduced to The Expendables, an eye-catching ensemble of veteran action stars attempting to rekindle the B-movie thrills of their younger years.  Dolph Lundgren, who has featured in all three Expendables to date, has now taken to Instagram to commemorate the anniversary, while also paying tribute to his co-star Sylvester Stallone.

In his caption, Lundgren references his long absence from the big screen, as The Expendables was the first time he had starred in a theatrical release for 25 years. It was Stallone who wrote the part of Gunnar Jensen with him in mind, a gesture that convinced him to return.

On August 13th, ten years ago, the younger generation around the world got their first taste of old school hardcore action mayhem in The Expendables,” said the actor. “It was also a long awaited return for me to the big screen thanks to my old buddy @officialslystallone.

Despite big initial success, the franchise receded from public consciousness as the last decade wore on. There hasn’t been an Expendables movie since 2014, with the still-unmade Expendables 4 slowly sinking into development hell. Perhaps there was a degree of over-saturation from the pensioner’s action genre (geriaction for short), which seemed to inhabit all corners of multiplex listings at the time. That and its increasingly outsized budgets delimiting realistic profits for the studio. Cast lists like that don’t come cheap, after all.

For those looking for good news on the future of The Expendables, prospects for the next sequel have been shining a little brighter recently. Earlier this year, Randy Couture said he’d received a completed script, though at that point production had yet to be green-lit.

With a more modest budget and the benefit of distance making fresh what was once not though, there’s no reason why The Expendables 4 can’t be viable. If Sly can get five movies out of Rambo, you can be damn sure he’ll find a way to get a fourth out of this.

The Best New Movies That Netflix Added This Past Week

Netflix can sometimes be a bit hit and miss when it comes to movies, but some new additions have proved unexpectedly strong this past week and here are the highlights.

The big one last week was Project Power, the streaming service’s take on the all-encompassing zeitgeist of superpowers. A police officer, a teenage drug dealer and a vengeful man form various sides of the investigation into a new drug that affords its users temporary superhuman abilities, along with those behind its creation.

Safety Not Guaranteed also landed last week and is a quirky mix of humor, romance and sci-fi that got Colin Trevorrow noticed and subsequently the job of directing Jurassic World. A trio of journalists are assigned to investigate a newspaper advert (remember them?) asking for companions for a journey back in time, and discover a paranoid but rational man whose mission sparks meditations on regret for past mistakes and the abandoning of dreams as we age.

Freak Show sees a flamboyant teenager begin attending a conservative high school, refusing to compromise himself despite the ridicule and abuse he endures from his peers, then decides to run for Homecoming Queen. The story makes points about how everyone in high school is set apart in some way, and that being true to yourself will put obstacles in your path but also ultimately lead to you being happier.

Fearless is an animated family movie where a teenage gamer becomes the guardian of a trio of superpowered babies as a result of completing his favorite game, and must protect them from the armies of Earth and the machinations of an interstellar warlord who wants to steal their powers.

And finally, The Lost Husband was the last of the big arrivals this past week and sees a widowed woman moving with her kids to a rural farm to start over, and as a mutual attraction grows between her and the hunky farm hand, she begins to emerge from her grief and come alive again. Being isolated from the world is something many people have been struggling with lately, many of us also coping with the loss of loved ones, which has led to this particular movie riding Netflix’s Top 10 list all week long.
