Markets blogger Zero Hedge suspended from Twitter after doxxing a Chinese scientist

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Twitter says it has permanently suspended markets blog Zero Hedge’s Twitter account, @zerohedge, for violating the company’s platform manipulation policy. On Wednesday, Zero Hedge posted a blog that doxxed a Chinese scientist and strongly suggested without evidence that the scientist created the strain of coronavirus that’s currently spreading around the world.

That blog lists a name, photo, email, and phone number that are reportedly tied to the scientist, and suggested that readers “pay [him] a visit” if they wanted to know “what really caused the coronavirus pandemic.” BuzzFeed News reported on Zero Hedge’s blog that doxxed the scientist earlier this evening, ahead of the Twitter suspension.

The Verge is not publishing a link to Zero...

Ron Howard Says He Had A Blast Making Solo: A Star Wars Story

Star Wars has always been a story about family and the legacies that we each give ourselves over to, rebel against, or build for ourselves. The same is true on the production side, particularly since that galaxy far, far away was annexed by the House of Mouse. Most notably, Leia Organa actress Carrie Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, appeared throughout the Sequel Trilogy as Lt. Connix and eventually stood in (with a bit of computer-generated assistance) as a young Leia herself in The Rise of Skywalker after her mother’s passing.

That tradition has also extended behind the camera, as last November’s fourth chapter of the Disney+ streaming series The Mandalorian, “Sanctuary,” was directed by Jurassic World co-star Bryce Dallas Howard. She, in turn, is the eldest daughter of Academy Award winner Ron Howard, whose performing pedigree goes all the way back to his time playing Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show during the 1960s. The Howard patriarch also got final directing credit on the 2018 film, Solo: A Star Wars Story (written by Jonathan Kasdan, the son of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi co-writer Lawrence Kasdan), after taking over from original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Ron Howard revealed that his daughter had accompanied him during his time on Solo, playing padawan to the filmmaking Jedi, to learn the finer details of directing, and that “she had a couple of pretty great suggestions.” He described the process of picking up Solo mid-production as “almost a rewrite and a continuation,” having to rearrange many of the pieces that Lord and Miller had already put in place while building new material around them.

Howard, however, was undaunted by the undertaking, explaining:

“I had a blast making that movie, and it did remind me that I really enjoy that kind of playful storytelling and the action, and I love tech. I love actors more, but it’s great what you can offer audiences.”

Of course, Solo offered audiences a look into the untold history of one of the Star Wars universe’s most adored characters, but was significantly hamstrung by its need to cast a different actor to fill Harrison Ford’s unfillable boots, which one reviewer called “a cinematic cardinal sin.”

The decision incited the fury of some of the franchise’s most vocal devotees, but Howard recalled advice that he received from the galactic grandmaster himself, George Lucas, regarding their relationship with those diehard enthusiasts. “It’s for the fans,” Lucas told him: “And yet you have to have the courage to hear them but tell the story you want to tell.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download, while the first season of The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+, with a second season confirmed for later this year.

Fast & Furious 9: What Happened To Han In Tokyo Drift

Earlier today, the first trailer for Fast & Furious 9 began making the rounds, and unsurprisingly, fans have been freaking out about Han’s return to the series. The level of excitement is understandable – after all, actor Sung Kang’s last major role in the franchise was nearly seven years ago – but his casting does raise a couple of questions. What exactly happened during the events of Tokyo Drift, and how is Han returning from the grave, so to speak?

Let’s address that first question. As longtime fans know, the series tends to play fast and loose with its timeline, as some movies have acted as either sequels or prequels to past installments. Specifically, despite being the third film (in terms of release date), Tokyo Drift actually takes place after the events of Fast & Furious 6, which explains how Han was able to appear on-screen despite his death.

Having traveled to Japan after taking down Owen Shaw, he befriends Sean Boswell, and over the course of Tokyo Drift, Han teaches his new “student” the art of drifting. However, his life is (supposedly) cut short when he’s T-boned by a Mercedes, with audiences left to believe he died in the ensuing explosion.

In Fast & Furious 6‘s mid-credits scene, it’s revealed that Deckard Shaw, Owen’s brother, was behind the wheel of the Mercedes, having taken out Han as revenge for his brother’s death. Over the next few films, Deckard became a member of Dominic Turreto’s crew, which rubbed some audiences the wrong way, seeing as how his role in Han’s “death” was never really addressed.

Of course, as the trailer for Fast & Furious 9 revealed, Han is actually alive and well, and it looks like he’ll finally be getting the justice he deserves. It’s not entirely clear exactly how he survived the aforementioned crash (or what he’s been up to this whole time), but we imagine that’ll be answered in the coming months.

Amazon’s Echo Show can now scan barcodes to flesh out your shopping list

Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge

In our review of the Amazon Echo Show 5 smart display, Dan called it the “smart alarm clock to get.” But I think I might move mine to the kitchen, right next to the garbage can.

That’s partly because Amazon has just added the ability for the Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 8’s camera to scan barcodes, and automatically add those items to your shopping list (via VentureBeat). I might do that when I’ve got an empty package I’m about to toss in the trash.

You start by saying “Alexa, scan this to my shopping list.” Up pops this screen:

I just tried it with a milk carton, orange juice, and a New Balance shoebox, and it seems to work fine in each case, adding each to my Alexa shopping list....

The guy who knew Nintendo’s Switch surprise ahead of time has pled guilty to hacking

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge

A California man has pled guilty to hacking Nintendo’s servers to steal confidential files, including taking information about the Nintendo Switch months before it was announced, the US Department of Justice revealed today.

According to the DOJ, Ryan Hernandez, 21, and an associate phished a Nintendo employee in 2016 to get access to and steal confidential information from the company. In October 2017, the FBI contacted Hernandez and his parents to ask him to stop hacking, at which time Hernandez “confirmed that he understood the consequences of any future hacking.”

However, from at least June 2018 to June 2019, Hernandez continued to illegally access confidential corporate information,...

Former X-Men Star Passes On Advice For The MCU’s Cyclops

Marvel Studios is set to relaunch the X-Men franchise within the MCU over the next few years, meaning fans should get ready to meet a recast roster of mutant heroes. Usual leader of the team Scott Summers will likely be among them, but what advice does veteran Cyclops actor James Marsden offer to the next person to don Cyke’s ruby quartz visor?

Well, actually, his advice has everything to do with the X-Man’s snazzy red-tinged headgear. In an interview with Collider to promote Sonic the Hedgehog, Marsden talked about how the biggest challenge of bringing Cyclops to life as an actor is building a three-dimensional character without the use of your eyes. Especially a straight-down-the-line character like Scott.

“The biggest challenge was that, the audience and other actors never being able to see your eyes. Definitely was a handicap in bringing a persona to the character, and an energy to the character. To a character who is also very, by nature, very by-the-books. Kind of a Boy Scout, ‘do the right thing.’ He’s a foil to Wolverine’s character, who is more fly by the seat of his pants, a little more unpredictable, and aggressive.”

When facing this challenge, Marsden urged whoever’s the next Cyclops to tackle the character however they see fit – and to not necessarily prescribe to the comic books in doing so.

“I would just say lean into it. Own it. And carve out your own thing. The fans of the books are going to tell you ‘it needs to be this’. Find a new way to make it interesting. Because it is tough to like get something interesting and cool and different across when no one ever sees your eyes. Which is obviously, you know, the main part of the character.”

Marsden played Scott four times across Fox’s X-Men universe – in the original trilogy and then for a cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past. His successor was Tye Sheridan, who appeared as the younger Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, as well as a silent cameo in Deadpool 2. It’s likely Marvel will hire an actor somewhere between Sheridan and Marsden’s ages to play their version, but who they may be eyeing, we don’t yet know.

Tell us, though, who would you like to see portray Cyclops in the MCU’s X-Men reboot? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

New Fast & Furious 9 Poster Promises Justice For Han

If you’ve been keeping up to date on the news surrounding Fast & Furious 9, then you’ll know just how surprising today has been. A few hours ago, the film’s first trailer finally made its debut, and with it, revealed that fan-favorite Han is in fact alive, despite his apparent death all the way back in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Of course, WGTC first reported on actor Sung Kang’s return a few months back, but up until today, it wasn’t quite clear if he would be appearing in flashbacks, or whether or not the series’ next entry might take place earlier in the ongoing timeline.

Of course, fans are going wild after hearing of his return, and unsurprisingly, there’s been a renewed call for #JusticeForHan. For those who aren’t entirely familiar with the situation, here’s a quick rundown. As we mentioned, Han was supposedly killed during the events of Tokyo Drift, but it was later revealed in Fast & Furious 6 that the man who was responsible for his “death” was none other than Deckard Shaw. This was all fine and well, but fans took issue with how quickly Shaw was folded into and accepted by Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) and his street racing crew. And thus, the #JusticeForHan campaign took form.

Since then, the franchise’s creative crew has promised that Shaw’s role in Han’s “death” would be addressed, and it looks like they might finally be delivering on their promise. Earlier today, a new poster for Fast & Furious 9 began making the rounds, and it’s emblazoned with the tagline “Justice Is Coming.” Seeing as how the poster features Han leaning against a car, it’s reasonable to assume that things will be addressed when the film drops later this year on May 22nd.

We’re curious though, what are your thoughts on Han’s return? Do you think the writers are taking too many creative licenses, or would you prefer to have him back in the fold? Let us know in the comments below!
