Disney+ crashed on launch day because its software wasn’t ready for the demand

Photo: Lucasfilm / Disney

On Disney+’s first day, its initial 10 million subscribers were hit with a series of outages. The company says this was because of high demand and the way engineers “architected the app.”

Ahead of the launch, Disney executives thought they would be ok. Michael Paull, head of Disney Streaming Services, told The Verge in August that years of handling big streams (like Game of Thrones premieres and finales) prepared the team for a launch of this size. It didn’t.

New subscribers couldn’t log in to the app; if they managed to get in, streaming was nearly impossible. People thought it might be issues with Amazon or third-party platforms carrying the app, but Kevin Mayer, head of Disney’s direct to consumer division, denied those rumors.

Star Trek 4 eyes Fargo, Legion creator Noah Hawley to direct

After a three-year silence, there has been news on the fourth film in rebooted Star Trek film series: Noah Hawley, best known for creating FX’s Legion and Fargo TV series, is in final talks to write and direct it, according to reports from The Wrap and Deadline.

The most recent Star Trek film was 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. Unlike the original two films in the modern iteration of the franchise, Star Trek Beyond was directed by Justin Lin; 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness were directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams was a producer on Star Trek Beyond, and will be reprising the role in the as-yet-untitled fourth film.

The fourth Star Trek film was greenlit in 2016, with reports that Chris...

Star Trek 4 Back In Production With Chris Pine Returning

Star Trek is experiencing a nice little resurgence at the moment. The second season of Discovery went down pretty well with everyone, fans are starting to get excited for the imminent return of Picard in his own show, there are a couple different animated series in the works and let’s not forget that Quentin Tarantino is said to be putting together his own unique take on the franchise. But within all that, something still isn’t right.

We’re talking about Star Trek 4, of course, the much anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot that’s been stuck in development hell for a while now. As 2016’s Star Trek Beyond only brought in $343 million globally on a $185 million budget, the studio was unwilling to shell out too much money for the fourth installment and contract negotiations with both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth stalled. That was some time ago and for many months, it’s looked like the project was all but dead. But at long last, Deadline has brought us a promising update.

According to the outlet, Star Trek 4 is now back on the table. In fact, it’s even got a new writer and director in the form of Noah Hawley, who’s in final talks with Paramount to board the project.

Better yet is that Deadline says Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban will all be returning. And while the details end there, this is hugely exciting news. For one, you’ve got most of the core cast from the past few films all back for more and as for Hawley, he’s an immensely talented individual, perhaps best known for his work on Legion and Fargo.

Where the story may go and who else may be returning is still unclear, but Star Trek 4 has seemingly flickered back to life and with the engines now revved up and ready to go, you can expect to learn more shortly. Watch this space.

Avengers: Endgame Fans Spot Mysterious Helicopter In The Film

To say that Avengers: Endgame is a blockbuster of epic proportions would be to deal in wild understatement.

After all, it’s a three-hour action-packed romp filled to the rafters with A-list stars, easter eggs and time travel, so it’s easy to see why now that it’s on Disney Plus, folks are beginning to watch the 2019 event pic over, and over, and over again. And they seem to be enjoying it more and more with each viewing.

Indeed, Endgame more than delivered when it came to the crowd-pleasing, fist-in-the-air moments, be it Tony Stark’s final sacrifice to Captain America wielding Mjnolir. But beyond all the spectacle and over the top action, fans have also been making some strange new discoveries that many people seemingly missed while the movie was still in theaters.

Take this latest one, for example. Over on Reddit, folks have begun discussing how during the end of the film, where we see Hulk, Bucky and Falcon sending Steve back in time so that he can return the Infinity Stones, there’s a mysterious helicopter flying in the background. And with no dialogue present in the scene to explain it, it’s got people furiously speculating as to just what its purpose is and where it came from.

While it could be how the heroes got to this particular location and brought all their equipment with them, it isn’t made clear at any point in the movie why exactly it’s there in the shot. Some folks on Reddit have suggested it’s cleaning up the mess from the final battle and clearing out the rubble though, while others are having a bit more fun with the discovery, saying that it’s carrying The Walking Dead‘s Rick Grimes.

Whatever the case may be, this is undoubtedly another perplexing moment from Avengers: Endgame that’s now come to light thanks to it being available to watch on streaming platforms and on home video. Following on from the discovery of that mysterious, unidentified creature that surfaced the other month, it just goes to show that even after all this time, there are still some secrets that haven’t been found in the pic.

If you have a Switch Lite, you should get this Nintendo flip case

nintendo switch lite

Nintendo has confirmed that it’ll start selling its official, previously Japan-only Switch Lite Flip Cover in the US next month, with a release date set for January 9th. This is good news, because it’s a great product, and I’d recommend picking one up when it’s out if you’re using the newer, smaller Switch. It does what I want a case to do, which is to protect the screen while adding as little bulk as possible.

The Flip Cover is a lightweight case that the Switch clips into, with a fabric finish and a lid that attaches magnetically. It also comes with a plastic screen protector. I’ve been using the case for a few weeks now, as it came out in Japan at the beginning of the month alongside the Pokémon Sword and Shield limited edition...

Harry Potter Star Tom Felton Says He’s Self-Partnered Like Emma Watson

Ah, young love. It’s such a sweet thing to behold, isn’t it? Especially when that love comes from within. Harry Potter‘s ultimate power came from within at the end of the day, that ultimate power being determination, or whatever.

Speaking of which, Emma Watson was determined to make her single self quite a normal thing (which it is) in an interview a few weeks ago by saying that she was “self-partnered,” and got a ribbing online for it. Now, her former co-star Tom Felton has also applied the term to himself in solidarity.

Sitting down with The Daily Mail recently to shoot the breeze, the actor was asked about Watson’s use of the term, and he’s super into it, apparently. Here’s what he told the outlet:

“I like it! It’s the first I’ve heard of it, but it’s great. I’m in the same category to be honest with you, quite happily self-partnered. I think in this day and age it’s not a necessity to be with someone just for the sake of being with someone, so I like the idea of self-partnering. I think you need to love yourself before you can love anyone else, so that’s a start.”

After that, Felton also explained that he thinks of his one-year-old Labrador Willow as his partner, so I can only imagine the droves of ladies that are soon going to be beating down his door to remove that “self” from the “partnered.” Watch out, Tom.

But honestly, this is nice to see – friends helping each other out. There were rumors flying around a while back that, because Watson and Felton spent some time together just hanging out in Los Angeles, that they were dating. This is obviously not the case, though. However, the once-villainous actor did say that Watson is an “incredibly smart and lovely young lady,” even if he’s only three years older than her.

Maybe in that Harry Potter sequel they’re working on, we’ll get a self-partnered-and-proud wizard. Who knows? For now, though, be sure to leave your thoughts on Tom’s comments in the usual place down below.

James Gunn Says A Marvel Vs. DC Movie Is Possible

DC and Marvel’s rivalry is infamous, with the two universes having co-existed but (almost) never interacting. At one point, the primary difference between them was that Marvel was more concerned with superheroes with human flaws, while DC was more about fantastical stories, but now, the tonal difference between the two is somewhat academic. With that in mind, what might a DC vs. Marvel superhero movie look like?

You might scoff at the idea of Batman hanging out with Spider-Man on screen, but Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn isn’t ruling anything out. During an online Q&A a fan asked: “You think it would be possible [to do] a DC vs Marvel movie?” Here’s how Gunn responded:

“In the past I would have said no way, but today I think anything is possible.”

Let’s be real here, this isn’t going to happen anytime soon. However, if anyone would know the chances, it’d be Gunn. He’s in the unique position of working with Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. at the same time. And the very fact that he’s able to do that suggests a slight thawing of the relationship between the two studios. But that’s still a long, long way from them actively collaborating on a movie. I think the only circumstances either company would seriously consider it for would be if both of their franchises were failing and each one had nothing to lose.

But as Gunn says, anything can happen. It’s also worth remembering that there was an often-forgotten comics crossover between DC and Marvel in the 1990s called Amalgam. It wasn’t very good, but it did provide a number of strange and interesting combinations of iconic heroes, with the best being Dark Claw aka Logan Wayne, who was Wolverine and Batman at the same time. Also, he looks awesome in a ridiculous 1990s kind of way. Now that I think about it, who wouldn’t watch a Dark Claw movie?
