Mulan Trailer Being Trashed In China For Historical Inaccuracies
Does anyone else remember the last time Disney gave us an original live action film? Sure, you can name Christopher Robin, or The Nutcracker and the Four Realms out of kindness, but other than that, there hasn’t been much.
That’s mostly because the studio’s been super busy taking our childhood favorites and converting them into live action remakes, pushed into theaters for some good ol’ nostalgia-based cash grabbing. With the exception of maybe Dumbo, none of them have been particularly unenjoyable, but they do feel, to a lot of people, a bit uninspired.
That being said, the upcoming Mulan actually has us pretty excited and now that the first trailer’s hit the web, initial impressions on it are starting to roll in. Thankfully, most people seem to dig it, but over in China, the preview is being trashed for its supposed historical inaccuracies.
According to Variety, those in the Middle Kingdom are taking issue with Mulan and the backlash is beginning to show on social media.
“Disney shouldn’t be so careless and just think that because tulou are beautiful, they can make Mulan live in one. She’s not Fujianese!” wrote one detractor who wondered how Mulan would manage to make it north to fight the Huns, adding: “I guess this Mulan has to take the subway out to join the army?”
Meanwhile, someone else expressed a similar sentiment in a video that now has roughly 8 million views, saying:
“This film is just trying to ingratiate itself to Western audiences. It’s like they thought, oh, this element is really Chinese, it’s very Oriental, so I’m going to shove it into the film to make everyone feel this is a very ‘Chinese’ film.”
“This mess of mixing unrelated Oriental elements is really disrespectful of non-Western cultures and audiences,” the individual added. “This is not about [the producers] truly appreciating elements of a culture that is different from Hollywood’s, but using them to create something that [Americans] find comfortable and appealing.”
While we could see where these people are coming from, it also feels like they’re being a bit too nit-picky. I mean, it’s just a movie, and it’s not exactly like it’s pretending to be a perfectly accurate historical epic or anything of the sort. But you’re always going to run into these issues when it comes to telling a story like the one Mulan aims to tell. After all, you can’t please everyone, right?

Black Panther 2 Will Reportedly Feature Another Battle Of Wakanda
If Marvel’s standalone Black Panther pic told us anything, it was that the eponymous mantle is more than just one person – similar to Batman, it represents a legend, one that can strike fear in some and inspire hope in others.
In Ryan Coogler’s cultural phenomenon, it was Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa who eventually found himself as Wakanda’s loyal protector, fighting off competition from Erik Killmonger and Winston Duke’s M’Baku as he took the throne and was crowned the rightful king.
But it seems his troubles aren’t behind him just yet, as in the upcoming sequel, the currently untitled Black Panther 2, his country will come under attack from another ruler looking to take control of it. According to sources close to We Got This Covered, the plot for the film is currently being shaped and one idea that will likely form a good bulk of it is that T’Challa will have to fight for Wakanda, with either Namor or Princess Zanda being the antagonist who’s looking to take over.

Given that there’s no script in place yet, things can always change, but as of now at least, this is the direction that Marvel wants to go in, with a large part of the film likely to focus on this struggle for control of Wakanda. And with that will also come some pretty epic battles for the country. Whether any of the other Avengers will show up to help, we can’t say just yet, but we’d certainly welcome it if they did.
In any case, this definitely sounds good to us, though given that Black Panther 2 likely won’t be reaching cinema screens until 2021, it may be a while before we get confirmation on any of it. Then again, with San Diego Comic-Con going down next week, perhaps Marvel will peel back the lid on the hugely anticipated sequel at that point? Time will tell, but as always, stay tuned for more.

Terminator: Dark Fate Director Says The Movie Will Scare Misogynist Trolls
Aside from Halloween‘s excellent handling of Jamie Lee Curtis and her on-screen character Laurie Strode, how many female movie heroes can you name above the age of 40? Not a whole lot, probably.
That was the question posed by the legendary James Cameron, who’s returning to the franchise he helped birth with this year’s Terminator: Dark Fate. He won’t do so alone, of course, given that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are also on board for the project.
Hamilton has naturally stolen most of the headlines, seeing as Dark Fate marks her first appearance in the series – aside from an uncredited voice role in Salvation – in 27 years. And based on the sequel’s explosive trailer, time has not been kind to the franchise’s post-Skynet world. As such, the remnants of humanity will need a hero – a leader – to help them out, and while we imagine Hamilton’s Sarah Connor will fill that role, she won’t be on her own.
Enter Mackenzie Davis’ Grace. Billed as the lead of the pic and set to play a huge role, Grace is a character we still know little about, but according to director Tim Miller, she’s going to scare “the f*ck out of” closet misogynists.
“If you’re at all enlightened, she’ll play like gangbusters. If you’re a closet misogynist, she’ll scare the f*ck out of you, because she’s tough and strong but very feminine. We did not trade certain gender traits for others; she’s just very strong, and that frightens some dudes. You can see online the responses to some of the early sh*t that’s out there, trolls on the internet. I don’t give a f*ck.”
Strong words, but it sounds like Miller’s sticking to his vision for the film and not comprising in any way, which is a good sign. And it’ll certainly be interesting to see the online reaction to Davis’ character once the pic releases.
Speaking of which, Terminator: Dark Fate will hit theaters worldwide on November 1st. It’s the day after Judgment Day, so we fully expect John, Sarah, and the T-800 to be entering a desolate, hopeless world. And we can’t wait to see what it holds in store for them.
