The University of South Carolina received a library of 180,000 comics from a life-long collector

The University of South Carolina received an unusual donation recently: the entire collection of a comic book collector from Ohio, totaling more than 18,000 comics, books, magazines, and other items, estimated to be worth around $2.5 million.

Some of the collection’s comics will go on display at the Thomas Cooper Library on August 29th. The debut of the collection will also be accompanied by a series of events at the school, such as talks by comic book authors and artists.

The collection includes a number of rarities, including Avengers #1, which depicted the first teamup of Stan Lee’s creations in 1963, along with titles that introduced characters like Spider-man, Batman, Black Panther, Iron Man, and more. The university says that...

Don’t like today’s smartwatches? Just build your own

Smartwatches are tough. Not only does the technology have to be functional on the inside, but it needs to work as a fashion statement, too, since it’s something that you wear all the time. You could go and compare products, or you could do what product designer Samson March did, and just build your own entirely from scratch, via Engadget.

And better yet, March has provided an incredibly detailed look at his process and all his files for the build, meaning that with a little (okay, fine, a lot of) work, you can build your own smartwatch, too.

To be clear, though — this isn’t something for the faint of heart. Even with March’s instructions, you’ll still have to 3D print the case (March’s is made out of a 3D-printable wood / plastic...

Avengers: Endgame Officially Crosses $2 Billion Worldwide

As a standalone movie, Avengers: Endgame is an exhilarating rollercoaster of blockbuster action and fan service at its finest, with a few glaring plot holes to boot. But as the final chapter in this current era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was pretty much perfect.

So perfect that it warrants one or two Oscar nominations, though? Disney and Marvel Studios certainly seem to think so, as the companies are apparently planning a major push for Endgame ahead of the 2019-2020 awards circuit. And we know what you’re thinking; superhero movies often don’t resonate with Academy voters.

You’re right, but following last year’s Best Picture nomination for Black Panther, there’s now a precedent for the Powers That Be to recognize what is hands down the MCU’s crowning achievement – a historic feat in and of itself, given that last year saw the release of Infinity War and its own super-sized ensemble.

But even if Endgame walks away with no Oscar nods at all, it will still always be remembered as one of the all-time biggest films at the box office, with the sequel crossing the $2 billion mark worldwide after only its second weekend in theaters.

Yes, that’s right, Joe and Anthony Russo’s latest effort has now grossed $2.188 billion globally ($619.6 million domestically and $1.56 billion internationally), putting in a very exclusive club of movies that also includes its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War. What’s perhaps even more impressive though is that it’s also sailed right past Titanic to become the second highest grossing film of all-time.

Next stop? Avatar, which is still somehow – almost inexplicably – the king of the box office at $2.78 billion. Can Avengers: Endgame, surpass it? Time will tell, but at this rate, we wouldn’t be surprised if it does.

Avengers: Endgame Directors Are Almost Disappointed By The Film’s Box Office Success

Avengers: Endgame has turned out to be every bit the megahit that people were predicting it to be, but if you ask co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo, it’s a shame that the movie’s box office success is currently overshadowing the content of the film.

Speaking on the ReelBlend Podcast, Anthony went as far as to say that he’s almost disappointed at how well the Avengers: Infinity War sequel has been doing, since he feel this distracts from more interesting matters:

“I have to be honest with you. I’m almost disappointed that the movie did so well, because it’s like, the box office story is literally dominating the conversation and it’s not the most interesting part of the story.”

To be fair, the Russo Brothers themselves have actively discouraged fans from talking about the content of Endgame, for fear of spoiling plot details. Granted, they’ve recently said that the spoiler ban officially lifts on Monday, but given the film’s phenomenal box office figures, it’s clear that a huge number of moviegoers already know the full story.

In any case, Joe Russo went on to observe how people have created a narrative around Endgame’s box office performance, which has saddled the project with some daunting expectations:

“It’s always about the narrative, too, of these movies in the marketplace. How did it do? Did it break a record? Did it beat the last one? That stuff is really critical to the life of a movie. And of course, we were hoping that it was going to break the international record. Because that’s a story, right?”

“And then you’re hoping and praying that it beats the domestic, which was set by Infinity War last year. Otherwise, frankly, [for] some people looks like a failure. It’s crazy that a movie like this has these kinds of demands on it.”

Regardless, it’s clear that we’re now well past the point where anyone could characterize Endgame as a commercial failure. By the end of its second weekend, it’s expected that the film will become the fastest movie ever to cross the $2 billion mark. And in the coming weeks, the flick has a very good chance of beating Avatar to become the highest grossing film of all time.

In short, while the Russo Brothers may be a little upset that Avengers: Endgame’s box office figures are dominating the conversation, it’s doubtful that the bosses at Disney are losing much sleep over the matter.
