Anker is making USB-C to Lightning cables
CES saw the first third-party USB-C to Lightning cables break cover from companies like Griffin and Belkin, and now popular purveyor of ion-stimulating apparatus Anker has confirmed it’s getting in on the game. The company claims (via 9to5Mac) that its Powerline cable will have “a bend lifespan of over 5 times higher than any other cable in the market,” while the Powerline+ will gain extra strength through an aluminum shell and braided nylon.
Anker is also releasing a USB-C to female Lightning cable that’s primarily designed as an audio adapter, letting you use Lightning headphones with USB-C devices like the new iPad Pro or recent Apple laptops. The USB-C to Lightning cables will go on sale in March from $20.99 and the audio adapter...

Ajit Pai locks horns with Congress over location-tracking report
A recent report on carrier tracking has sparked a growing feud between FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and the Congressional committee charged with overseeing him. Last Friday, Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Rep. But according to Pallone, Pai has refused to hold the briefing.
“Today, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai refused to brief Energy and Commerce Committee staff on the real-time tracking of cell phone location,” Pallone said. “In a phone conversation today, his staff asserted that these egregious actions are not a threat to the safety of human life or...

The Passage is a terrific horror series about terrible ideas
Spoiler warning: This review reveals some plot points of the first three episodes of The Passage.
The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but in Fox’s new show The Passage, which premieres on January 14th, the road to the end of the world is paved with bad ideas. Based on Justin Cronin’s best-selling trilogy about the vampire apocalypse, the show uses voice-over from spunky orphan turned government test subject Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney) throughout its first episode to provide ominous foreshadowing, showing how the characters’ mixture of bad circumstances and highly questionable responses are going to lead to even more horrible outcomes. “I didn’t used to believe in monsters, but I do now,” Amy says. “I saw them change...

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Pinkerton agents are at the center of a lawsuit
The publisher of Red Dead Redemption 2 has thrown down a legal gauntlet against the security company Pinkerton — which demanded royalties for using its name in the game. According to a complaint filed late last week, Pinkerton sent Take-Two Interactive a cease-and-desist letter over the characters of Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross, a pair of Pinkerton agents and major antagonists in the game. Now, Take-Two is suing to have the characters declared fair use, arguing that they’re part of Red Dead Redemption 2’s detailed historical setting.
Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations (now a subsidiary of security firm Securitas AB) delivered its cease-and-desist order in December, roughly two months after Red Dead Redemption 2’s release. It...

Tesla’s Model 3 will be the prime target at upcoming hacker contest
The Pwn2Own contest is one of the biggest events in competitive security research, a place where up-and-coming hackers can show off their skills and earn money by finding new vulnerabilities in widely used programs. But this year, there will be a new target on the list — a brand-new Tesla Model 3.
Tesla is partnering with the event’s organizers to include the Model 3 as the sole target in the automotive category, challenging hackers to find new ways to compromise the car’s security. The car is also a prize, to be awarded to a single winner in the automotive category.
It’s the first time a car has been put to the test at Pwn2Own, and a measure of Tesla’s commitment to digital security. “Our work with the security research community is...

Apple says Qualcomm refused to sell it chips for the latest iPhones
Apple says it wanted to use Qualcomm modems in the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR — but that Qualcomm refused to sell them after Apple sued over its licensing practices. “In the end they would not support us or sell us chips,” Apple’s chief operating officer Jeff Williams revealed today during his testimony to the US Federal Trade Commission, as spotted by CNET. Apple had to use Intel’s LTE chips instead.
Qualcomm is currently on trial, accused of engaging in monopolistic practices including charging unusually high royalty rates, refusing to license patents to other chipmakers, and promising deals to customers like Apple if they exclusively used Qualcomm chips.
While it originally appeared that Apple had shifted to exclusively using Intel...

TCL’s 65-inch 6-Series 4K TV is cheaper than ever at Amazon, Walmart, and Target
TCL’s 6-Series 4K HDR televisions are the best that you can get for under $1,000, and you have the rare opportunity to pick up the 65-inch version for $849.99 — it usually hovers just north of $1,000 — at Amazon, Walmart, and Target. If that’s a bit too big for your home or your price range, the 55-inch version is discounted to $629.99 from its usual $799.99.
TCL’s 6-Series is a good choice if you’re looking to make some budget-friendly home entertainment revisions before the 2019 Super Bowl or for any other reason. It’s not on the list of TVs to receive AirPlay 2 — blame Roku, not TCL — but nevertheless, this TV is slim, supports Dolby Vision and HDR 10, and the LED performance is arguably the best you can get for the price.

Frank Pallone (D-NJ) sent a letter to Pai requesting an “emergency briefing,” following reports that the nation’s largest cellphone carriers were disclosing consumers’ real-time location data.

Rob Zombie Has Officially Completed Three From Hell
It’s been a long, long time since we witnessed Otis, Baby, and Captain Spaulding meet their bloody end in the Bonnie and Clyde-style climax of The Devil’s Rejects, but it appears that neither time nor a hail of bullets can dampen the mean streak of these murderous antiheroes, with the trio set to return to screens later this year in Three From Hell.
Rob Zombie first introduced us to these psychopaths back in 2003’s House of 1000 Corpses, and in a recent Instagram post, the director revealed that he’s now completed work on the threequel. Unfortunately, he still doesn’t have a firm release date or even any plot details for us to feast on, but with his job now done, it’s surely only a matter of time before the marketing machine spins up and gives us something substantial.
For the moment, though, we remain in the dark in regards to what to expect, though it doesn’t seem like Three From Hell will be a mere retread of the first two installments. Late last year, Zombie teased that it’ll be a departure of sorts from Rejects and 1000 Corpses, and while he didn’t say much more than that, the many set pics we’ve seen already indicate that there’s some courtroom drama to be had in this next flick.

But don’t be mistaken in thinking that that means the director’s going to be holding back, because actor Bill Mosely recently promised fans that this long-awaited Devil’s Rejects sequel will be bringing the gore and violence.
“It’s chockablock with gratuitous violence [laughs], which is great, because lately there have been a lot of good horror movies that just don’t have a lot of that,” he said. “I mean, the violence is skillful, it’s effective, but it’s not gratuitous, and that’s what I think the fans are missing. I think we just want a lot of violence for violence’s sake—decapitations, shotguns to the face, just general ass-kickin’ stuff that we’re not really getting much of these day.”
That’s certainly exciting to hear, and though we’ve still yet to get an official release date for Three From Hell, it should be with us in Q2 or Q3, at which point, Moseley assures us that our “mindsies are gonna be big time blown.”
