Mobvoi’s new Wear OS smartwatches can detect different types of physical activity
Mobvoi announced its TicWatch E2 and S2 smartwatches at CES today, the first of its Wear OS watches to receive a range of features called TicMotion. The company says its watches will be able to detect motions and gestures to automatically trigger different functions. For example, if you start cycling, it’ll start tracking your ride stats automatically without making you set the watch to Cycling mode beforehand.
The E2 and S2, which stand for Express and Sport respectively, are the sequel to Mobvoi’s TicWatch E and S fitness wearables which originally launched through Kickstarter in 2015. Both watches are rugged enough for intense physical activities, equipped with 5ATM water-resistance so you can track your swimming activities. They...

This gigantic metal suitcase is perfect for portable console gaming
When popular Fortnite streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins took a four-day break in June to attend the annual E3 video game conference in Los Angeles, he lost more than 100,000 subscribers — all because he wasn’t streaming every single day that week. The channels of streamers like Ninja, and plenty of other online entertainers in the Twitch and YouTube space, basically live or die on consistency.
So with that kind of pressure to pump out daily content, GAEMS, a supplier of portable gaming set ups, decided it would make the most high-end, premium version of its product to try and alleviate some of that stress. The result is the Guardian, a massive suitcase with a built-in monitor for both gaming consoles and PCs that can be lugged around and...

The cute, programmable Misty II robot is $800 cheaper than we thought
Misty Robotics, a spinoff of Sphero and the creators of the Misty programmable robot have announced that the Misty II will start shipping to its backers in April, according to TechCrunch. It will mark a four month shipping delay, as Misty originally planned to ship its robotics platform in December of last year.
The Misty II robotics platform will cost $2,399, which might sound like a costly entry fee, but that’s actually an $801 price drop — the robot’s original price was $3,200. At that price it’s not competitive with robotics platforms like the Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit (which costs $349) as it’s not intended for the average consumer just yet.
Instead, Misty is looking to employ the collective skills of STEM students, tinkerers, and...

The Lapscreen is a paper-thin 12.5-inch USB-C monitor you can take anywhere
One of the big promises of USB-C has always been the potential for great accessories, and at CES 2019, those products are finally starting to materialize with things like the Lapscreen: a paper-thin 12.5-inch USB-C monitor that can run entirely off a single cable plugged into your phone or laptop.
Measuring 11.1-inches by 8.3-inches (including a rather large chin that also houses the USB-C and HDMI ports), the whole thing is roughly the size of a sheet of paper, and at 4mm thick for the display portion, it’s nearly as thin as a few sheets stacked together, too. Even the chin at the bottom that houses the ports and components is incredibly slim at 8mm thick, to the point where what I assumed was one screen actually turned out to be a...

Nissan’s new Leaf goes more than 200 miles on a charge
Nissan has promised a long-range version of the new Leaf ever since it updated its famous electric car back in 2017, and this week at the Consumer Electronics Show the Japanese automaker finally broke its silence. The new version of the Leaf — dubbed “Leaf e+” — will be able to travel 226 miles on a full charge, Nissan says, which is about a 40 percent improvement in range.
The new Leaf e+ will also be more powerful than its predecessors. It will be available this month in Japan for ¥4,162,320 (about $38,300), and will arrive in Europe in “mid-2019,” Nissan says, where it will cost 45,500 euro (about $51,900). The Leaf e+ will come to the US in the spring, but no pricing has been announced. It will also be sold in three trim levels, two...

The world’s first foldable phone is charmingly awful
The Royole FlexPai is the sort of device that companies rush out when they feel the absolute imperative to be first with some new technology. I don’t blame Royole — a five-year-old company literally founded for the purpose of developing and selling flexible displays — because it faced the existential threat of Samsung coming in and stealing its thunder with a rival foldable device. So Royole hurriedly threw the FlexPai together and let the world gawk at its wondrous, foldable awfulness.
I got to grips with the FlexPai today and I was amused by how dysfunctional most of its software was. But let’s talk hardware first. Measuring 7.8 inches diagonally, this is an Android tablet in its extended mode which becomes two, not just one, Android...

Riding in Daimler’s new semi-autonomous big rig
In 2015, Daimler told the world it was building the world’s first self-driving semi truck. It pulled out all the stops for the big reveal of the prototype, debuting the truck on top of the Hoover Dam in the middle of the night and renting out Las Vegas Motor Speedway to offer test rides. This week at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, Daimler is back with the near-final production version of that truck, and we got to take another ride.
Over the last three years, Daimler has taken the technology and the ideas that were in that prototype truck and worked them into the latest version of the Freightliner Cascadia, one of the company’s most popular trucks. More importantly, Daimler says it’s ready to put the truck into production this...

Microsoft is helping America’s largest grocery chain fight off Amazon
Kroger, America’s largest grocery store chain, has partnered with Microsoft to create a pair of hi-tech grocery stores. The stores, which are located in Washington and Ohio, are filled with digital shelf labels and image recognition cameras, and aim to create a retail environment that’s easier for both customers and retail employees to navigate. The two companies also hope to use the digital signage to sell targeted ads based on customer demographics.
Kroger is the second major retailer to have partnered with Microsoft after Walmart announced a partnership of its own last year. America’s retail incumbents are wary of the growing threat Amazon poses to their businesses, both via its Whole Foods acquisition and the 3,000 Amazon Go stores...

Panasonic announces ‘world’s most cinematic TV’ with built-in Dolby Atmos speakers
Panasonic isn't much of a US TV brand anymore, but the company still releases new sets internationally. At CES, it's announcing its latest flagship GZ2000 4K OLED TV, which Panasonic says utilizes a “professional edition” panel that's been tuned to perfection in Hollywood by colorist Stefan Sonnenfeld.
With the GZ2000, Panasonic is claiming a number of firsts. This TV supports both Dolby Vision and the Samsung-backed HDR10+, which Panasonic says sets it apart. It also supports HLG Photo for displaying HDR color gamut in still images from the company's own mirrorless cameras. The TV features upward-firing Dolby Atmos speakers built directly into the TV, which is fairly unique as TV speakers go. The audio output was tuned by Panasonic’s...

Obsbot Tail is like a Google Clips camera for YouTubers
Shenzen-based Remo showcased its first product at CES today, a 4K, AI-enabled camera called the Obsbot Tail which follows subjects around like a dedicated cinematographer. A 12-megapixel camera with 3.5x optical zoom sits on a 3-axis gimbal, which swivels around smoothly. It’s meant to be ideal for capturing scenes at the skate park, basketball court, or dance: anything where a lot of movement is involved. Or if you’re not regularly shooting yourself doing skateboarding tricks, it’s also useful for YouTubers who want to level up their videos without having to ask a friend to film.
The Obsbot recognizes various gesture controls — you can flash your palm towards the camera to get it to lock its focus on you; putting up a peace sign will...

Samsung warns of sharp sales and profit decline
Samsung Electronics recorded its highest ever profits last quarter, but three months on things aren’t looking so great. The company issued guidance today warning that revenue and profits for the three months ending December 31st 2018 will be sharply down year-on-year. Samsung expects sales of about 59 trillion won (about $52.5 billion), down 11 percent from 12 months prior, while operating profit is set to drop 29 percent to about 10.8 trillion won (about $9.6 billion).
The forecast has shocked investors and analysts, which CNBC notes were expecting 13.2 trillion won of operating profit from 62.8 trillion in revenue. Unusually, Samsung has issued a statement explaining its guidance; the company normally waits for the full earnings...

This absurd and amazing smart standing desk has a built-in PC and three touchscreens
The ideal workstation depends on who you ask, and whether that person prefers more monitors or just one and just how much clutter they’re comfortable with. But the closest approximation to most modern office workers’ dream workstation is probably the Cemtrex SmartDesk, an absurdly over-featured, three-monitor adjustable standing desk with a built-in Windows PC and a dizzying number of other integrated features.
The desk made the rounds online earlier this year, but we actually got to try it ourselves here at CES, and it’s actually quite a stellar setup. For one, you get three, 24-inch IP{S touchscreens to work with. (No 4K, unfortunately.) But on top of that, Cemtrex put a pretty solid keyboard, trackpad, and even a Leap Motion gesture...

Wacom’s $649 Cintiq 16 bridges the gap between hobbyists and pros
Wacom has announced its most affordable pen display ever, the $649 Cintiq 16. The new display shares the same stylus as higher-end products and is meant to be an entry-level introduction to pen displays for young creatives and hobbyists. It’s got a 15.6-inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 display, and its stylus, the Wacom Pro Pen 2, has 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity and never needs to be charged.
The Cintiq 16 is an entirely new device, distinct from the similarly named Cintiq Pro 16. It’s geared toward artists who want to make the transition from drawing on screen-less pen tablets that plug into computers, to physically drawing on the displays themselves. Previously, the steep price difference between Wacom’s intro line of Intuos...

New Captain Marvel trailer brings Agent Coulson back to the MCU
A new sneak peek at Captain Marvel that aired during the College Football Playoff National Championship game between Alabama and Clemson brought back one of Marvel’s most beloved characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe — Agent Coulson.
Coulson appeared to die in the first Avengers film in 2012, but continued to live on in ABC’s Agents of SHIELD. Although, like Agent Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, Coulson (Clark Gregg) is much younger than we remember in Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel takes place before the majority of the current MCU films — with the exception of Captain America: The First Avenger, which took place during the Second World War.
The new Captain Marvel trailer also provides a better glimpse into the...

T-Mobile roasts AT&T for updating phones with a fake 5G logo
We don’t usually pay much attention to T-Mobile’s Twitter antics, but earlier today the carrier had a solid retort to some nonsense from AT&T. In response to AT&T updating a few different phones to show a “5G E” connectivity logo — despite being completely incapable of connecting to a 5G network — T-Mobile tweeted a short video of someone putting a sticky note reading “9G” on top of their iPhone’s LTE icon.
It’s a simple and dumb stunt. And it’s a completely fair metaphor for what AT&T is doing.
AT&T is updating three phones (Samsung’s Galaxy S8 Active and LG’s V30 and V40) to show this pseudo-5G icon when they’re connected to LTE networks that have received some speed-boosting updates. While it’s true that the connections may be...
