Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Stars React To First Day Of Shooting

By the time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to theaters on May 5, 2023, exactly seven years to the day will have passed since the release of the last installment, which is comfortably the longest gap ever between standalone Marvel Cinematic Universe sequels.

A lot has and will transpire across those 2555 days, including the firing of James Gunn by Disney over some unsavory tweets he’d made a decade previously, which led to him jumping ship and making The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker for DC Films and Warner Bros., but he’s back in the arms of Marvel Studios at long last.

John Wick Fans Do Their Research After Chapter 4 Title Reportedly Leaks

The John Wick franchise could have very easily just kept naming its sequels as Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and so on in perpetuity, but the creative team appear to be making a concerted effort to settle on subtitles that force fans to either bust out a dictionary, or do some online research.

Should yesterday’s purported leak turn out to be right on the money, then it’s set to happen again, with Hagakure joining Parabellum as a word enthusiasts of action cinema will memorize the exact definition of in no time at all. The phrase is believed to be derived from the samurai warrior code bushido, which is perfectly in keeping with the theme of the saga.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Fans Speculate On Sinister Six Lineup

With just a few weeks to go until the movie’s release on December 17, Sony and Marvel Studios finally debuted the first official poster from Spider-Man: No Way Home last night. As you’d expect, the internet isn’t talking about anything else, with every corner of the one-sheet being zoomed in and examined in great detail.

The design team knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to tuck Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin away in the background, and it raises an interesting question; has Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus been the focal point so far because he was the only member of the villainous roster to outright confirm their involvement months ago?

James Gunn Clears Up Star-Lord’s Celestial Status After Eternals

It was James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy that brought the first mention of Celestials in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, tying the all-powerful beings directly to the creation of the Infinity Stones, but the deities didn’t play much of a part in the franchise after that. At least, until Eternals arrived in theaters on Friday.

As an expansive cosmic epic that spans thousands of years and introduces over a dozen characters audiences have never met before, Eternals invariably becomes bogged down in exposition at various points as the script explains who the titular team are and what their mission is, never mind how the Deviants, Arishem, Tiamut, the Emergence, Celestial Eggs and all the rest factor in.

Marvel Studios Celebrates Eternals Topping The Box Office

You’ve got to take the good with the bad at the box office, especially with the pandemic still having a detrimental effect on business across the board, so the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Eternals shouldn’t be viewed as anything other than a massive success after its first weekend in theaters.

Sure, the 26th installment in the franchise may have delivered the lowest first frame numbers since Ant-Man back in the summer of 2015, but a $71 million haul in three days has only been bettered by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Black Widow and Venom: Let There Be Carnage since the end of 2019.

The mid-credits scene also set up Carter’s role in the threequel, with the original live-action version of the iconic superhero poised to return as Asteria, the owner of the Golden Eagle armor sported by Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince as she battled against the duel threats of Pedro Pascal’s scenery chewing and Kristen Wiig’s terrible CGI makeover in the third act showdown.

Seth Rogen Wants An Eternals/Spider-Man Crossover For 1 Reason

Based on a worldwide opening weekend of $162 million, the second-highest of the pandemic behind only No Time to Die, the poor critical response to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Eternals clearly had no impact on how many people wanted to see the franchise’s 26th installment on the big screen as soon as possible.

The difference in opinion is right there for all to see on Rotten Tomatoes, where the intergalactic adventure has plummeted to a 48% score from critics, but audiences have rallied behind Eternals to deem it worthy of an 81% user rating. Longtime MCU supporters have been praising the movie at every turn, and now Seth Rogen is demanding a crossover with the Spider-Man series.

Eternals Star Seconds Angelina Jolie By Blasting LGBTQ+ Ban

It wouldn’t be unfair to suggest that Disney and Marvel’s attempts to portray LGBTQ+ characters in recent blockbusters have been flimsy at best, so credit has to go to the respective studios for refusing to censor or remove any scenes from Eternals featuring Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos, his husband or their family.

However, it did lead to the comic book adaptation getting slapped with the equivalent of an R-rating in Russia, while it’s been banned outright in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, with Angelina Jolie blasting the decision as ignorant, and the actress isn’t alone when it comes to that opinion.

Rival franchises don’t tend to acknowledge each other’s existence all that often, but that didn’t stop the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Eternals from making a couple of overt nods towards DC Comics icons Batman and Superman, which came as a surprise to many audiences given the professional rivalry between the two brands.

Fans have daydreamed about a big screen crossover ever since the MCU and DCEU first started doing battle at the box office, with James Gunn admitting that he’d floated the idea to both parties having planted one foot in either camp via the Guardians of the Galaxy series and The Suicide Squad.

Zack Snyder trending on social media is nothing new, with supporters of his DCEU tenure still relentlessly campaigning to see the mythology that was cut short and effectively ended by HBO Max’s Justice League continued, but the filmmaker seems more than happy with the stack of projects he’s got in the work at Netflix.

In a recent interview, Eternals director Chloe Zhao praised the filmmaker’s Man of Steel for influencing her approach to the Marvel Cinematic Universe epic, and there are definitely similarities than can be drawn when you compare how the two big budget comic book adaptations treat superheroes as deified beings rooted deeper in classic mythology than standard superhero shenanigans.
